But there are lot of geeks that use macs. I just don't like when non-nerdy people tell me how much better their mac is when they don't even know what a command line is 8).

I also see a lot of Macs at my workplace. Geeks seem to love them here too: they use it for personal things, not work.

I was a little torn actually, but since I wanted the ThinkPad for so long I went with it even though it was no longer IBM. I am among the minority when it comes to chemists. Most of my colleagues use Macs, and they try to sway me daily. LOL!

Exactly. Before I bought my thinkpad I asked a roommate what's so great about the macbook he had. His reply was nothing more than the commercial tag line, "oh everything just works with mac."

Yeah, because all you know how to do is web browse :)

Use my T61 at work and play.
Macs are also very popular in the biology department at my university. Had one myself, but prefer the Thinkpad in several ways.

It's cool to know that a bunch of techies are convening here. By far and large the guys/girls here are scientists and engineers. The others appear to be in business and facilitating the marketing of technology in some way. For those that are searching for the next big gig, the economy is looking up and I hope your searches conclude quickly.

Interesting thread. I've lurked for a while but have not posted anything (yet!) so I'll do so here.

Occupation: Founder and President of a Biological Tools company for proteomics applications.
    Education: Ph.D., Chemical Engineering
Age: Officially an old fart (shall we say, over 50).

At the proposal review panels on which I serve at NIH and NSF I'd say the mix is about a third Thinkpads, about a third Apples, and a third "other." NSF equips their conference rooms with older Thinkpads -- mostly T41p IIRC. They'd like to replace them, but the computers are fine for their current purpose, and the screen is great.

I want to thank aadams for being one to make this forum more hospitable to women.

Also, I am a dual phd of Clinical and physiological psych. I have a t61p and I have my own apartment after being in the hospital for a year after being hit by an illegal alien.

The T61p has gotten a little heavy lately.

Interesting topic. I'll have a go, even though I'm not as smart as most of you here lol

I have an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Manchester Community College in CT.
I'm training to be a Police Officer. My goal is to eventually go back to college (I'm still 23), get my Bachelor's degree, and get into the FBI/CIA.

And neither is importance... people with higher degrees might improve the future, but we still need people to improve our lives today. Just think what it would be like without police, paramedics, or even garbage collectors.

yeh unfortunately you need 2 years experience after graduating college to be considered for the FBI.

i was set on applying since i just turned 23, that being one of their requirements, yet i now need work experience in my field.

i may still apply in a few years once i get those 2 years of experience.

I started doing Web design in 1996 before anyone could design anything worth a damn on the Web. I just kept getting better at it to the point that I decided in high school to make it my profession. My degree was a joint program offered by my university's computer science and liberal arts colleges.

Okay, so you might be wondering what the hell someone like me is doing with a ThinkPad instead of a MacBook. Despite my profession, I more closely identify with engineers than designers. Unlike most of the condescending hipsters who took Apple's bait this decade, I actually worked with that abomination collectively known as Classic Mac OS. (Wait, you mean there were actually Macs before OS X? Yeah, I even remember Power Computing Corporation, so suck it, hipsters.) I was raised on DOS, took BASIC and C++ lessons when I was in elementary school, and have been building my own desktop PCs since 1999.

Believe it or not, I actually still have a Power PC clone from my college days. Back in the day, that sucker cost me over $3,000, and it came a generous 1GB hard drive which was sizable for those days.

Apple decided to kill the Mac clone business shortly afterwards, which pissed off a lot of people back then, myself included.

I actually do more graphics work than coding. I don't venture much farther beyond XHTML, CSS, and XML on a day-to-day basis. Sometimes I mess around with JavaScript that I didn't write. I do know enough PHP, VB, and C# for templating purposes and I've had to become familiar with MySQL for my sites, but I haven't actually done any serious programming since college, which was in Java. I have the programming background, but never retained the interest or discipline to continue down the road of a true developer.

I think designer and front-end developer would be the most accurate description. What I didn't mention in my previous post is that I spend most of my time in Photoshop over any other application when working. I also infrequently do print design and branding in Illustrator and InDesign as well.

I actually do all my graphics work on my desktop, so yes, I do work with an external monitor. :)

Apple was really hurting back in the mid-1990s, but Power Computing actually got me interested in a Mac, even if it was only for the couple of minutes it took to read the reviews on their machines. Their systems benchmarked as the fastest desktop computers you could buy at the time. $3000 was on par with the most expensive Intel-based desktops offered by Dell and Gateway, so to get a top of the line Mac clone for the same price as a PC was a great deal compared to buying an Apple-branded machine.

in Canada that would be the equivalent of secondary (depending on school) or junior high.

    Macintosh IT Developer

PS: if your computer can run vista YES it can run Leopard! (considering all vista is is a cracked watered down inbred version of Leopard) Snow Leopard... Now that's an entirely different situation. Although Snow Leopard is more of an upgrade for Leopard (like going from vista home basic to vista ultimate) Snow Leopard's hardware configuration runs a test scan making sure it is on a genuine Mac platform. Although if you know coding... There's always ways around this.
