Found this new on the Lenovo Outlet, it seemed like a deal to me. Don't care about the OS or lack of RAM; both can be changed by me rather easily.

    ThinkPad T400
    Intel Core2Duo P8600
    1GB DDR3 RAM
    160GB 5400rpm HDD
    CD-RW/DVD Combo drive
    14.1" WXGA+ screen w/CCFL backlight and Camera
    AMD M82XT (3470) graphics
    Intel 5100 WiFi, Bluetooth
    6-Cell battery
    Free case
    1-year warranty

    Price $787.00

I figure I can swap the DVD writer from my ThinkPad T61 (since both are listed as Ultrabay Slim), and sell my T61. I also have a 200GB 7200RPM drive I can put in it.

    Thoughts?

i got this same exact spec but with 2gb of ram (1 dimm) and a dvd burner for $727 brand new in may, so id say wait around for a good deal to come around.

EDIT: forgot, visit slickdeals.net for the CPP deal (should be on front page) as i cant mention it here and remember to use the current thinkpad coupon while at checkout.

CPP doesn't work for the outlet though, right?

no but, if you go to the retail/regular site the price can be cheaper or at least on par, wouldnt you rather have a new laptop than one from the outlet?

i config'd a t400 to the same specs as your outlet one and it came out to around 730 with the coupon, except the one on CPP has 2gb of ram.

    also: nice avatar lol

    Thanks.

Can you post here or PM me and let me know how you got $730? I got into the CPP site, but none of the coupon codes are applying. I got $806 before taxes. Maybe my CPP code is different than yours.

    Lonewolf,

I hope you're doing well. "The deal" is funny.

Thr CPU is fine,,,,wish I had a ghz conversion handy.
The disk is another question. 160 gigs is a reasonable size. 5400 rpm is ....slow. But what you got....is what you got.

    Btw, we aren't all guys...

    check your inbox.

also i just left everything else at default, only things i changed were what you listed, so like the media card reader, bluetooth are left out, that might be why your config comes out to more.

There was a pretty good sale for the T400 a week and a half ago, I got my new notebook for $674.75 (w/DVD Burner, Webcam, and 6 Cell Battery) Pre-Tax. I went with the lower resolution WXGA because I wanted the LED screen and games would run better at the native resolution of 1280x800 than at 1440x900. The memory I upgraded myself with a 2GB stick of Crucial DDR3 from Newegg for $19.99 w/free shipping. Guess I just got lucky.

Just wanted to bring to your attention that you can't do it, as the optical drives are not compatible! In the newest generation of ThinkPads (i.e. T400), Lenovo made a switch from Parallel ATA to Serial ATA interface for Ultrabay devices. If you look carefully, the designation of the drives is different to go along. Prior to T400 the devices were called Ultrabay Slim, whereas for T400 it's Serial Ultrabay Slim.

I did place the order  , but I'm going to cancel it. They already told me I can, but I have to wait until I get the order confirmation.

CPP seems easier to get than it used to be. The sales rep on the phone (when I demurred about purchasing `til my outlet transaction was voided) offered me a 20% discount right there; I'm guessing that's how he'd have done it. I did tell him I'd use his ID to give him credit when I ordered (no skin off my nose either way).

Renee, I agree the HDD is small. I do have a Seagate Momentus 200GB 7200rpm drive in my T61 though that I can take out and swap; I still have the original HDD for the T61 that I can put back in when I sell it. And yep, I know not everyone here is a "guy" when it comes to their equipment, but it was meant as a colloquialism. I certainly respect your opinion more than quite a few here. :)

Dawn, thanks for that note. It definitely changes things. Going to cancel the order the moment I have a confirmation e-mail.

Now that my impulsiveness has died down, another question --Is the generic B/G/N WiFi chipset Atheros, or something else? I've done fine with Atheros on my T61, so unless it's got a rep for flakiness or something, I doubt I need the 5100 or 5300 solutions.

Actually, I've heard good things about Atheros, I'd rather have an Atheros wifi card over an Intel card.

Yes, that's why my question is --Is the generic B/G/N wireless Atheros, or another chipset (e.g., Broadcom, Marvell, RaLink)?

    I hope it's Atheros. It's great for packet-sniffing.
