What does that 4-digit "product type" or "product id" mean? e.g. 2723, 7662...? What do the machines with the same type have in common?

CyberVisions Martian Notebook Overlord
Most products come with a base model "series" number, say for example, 7600. That number represent that model series' base configuration of hardware and software.
Other numbers within the series will indicate differing specific configurations that are pre-configured units for sale at stores and online. Others are "CTO" units, which means "Configure To Order". This is when you go through a configuration wizard online and setup a specific configuration of your own which changes the base configuration.
As an example, my HP HDX 9300 20" notebook is a CTO unit, with the maximum amount of upgrades available for this unit at the time.
Since it's not a pre-configured unit, like a 9396, it's designation is an HDX 9300 CTO. -
Thank you CyberVision.
What does the product Type mean exactly?
