I have a Thinkpad T60. Last night I booted off a CD with DBAN on it to securely erase a hard drive. It is taking much longer than expected, and will require a couple more days to finish. I was curious as to what would happen if I close the lid? Would the T60 go into sleep mode, or would DBAN keep running?

I'm pretty sure you can change what the closing of the lid does in Vista.

I think in the BIOS you can specify the behaviour of the lid when closing it, although I'm not sure. But by closing the lid heat will build up since there's no ventilation, I think the screen sometimes goes off after certain minutes.

I have my x200 Tablet (and my T40 before it) set to remain running when the display is closed (only when plugged in). The display turns off, but the machine does NOT go to sleep. This can be handy if I'm downloading large files/patches or running a media encode that may take several minutes or a few hours to finish. I have NEVER had any issues with heat as a result of closing the lid (most heat escapes out the main vent by the CPU and the small vents on the underside).
Back to the original question. I believe the machine will only go to sleep when you close the display if you are currently running an OS that supports standby mode. If you are in the BIOS or a heavily cut down OS (e.g. Darik's Boot and Nuke) I don't think anything would happen (except for the display turning off as I believe that's a hardware switch [like a refrigerator light]).
What happens if I close the lid?
