epic crash, i would suppose, as the RAM holds vital OS data. why in the world would you want to pull the RAM while the notebook is in use?

Never unplug anything if power is running through it. Definately never put it back.

    RAM is not hot swappable.

what, you think that in standby, the RAM is completely empty? that's borderline stupid. and if you don't believe me that you shouldn't pull the RAM out while the notebook is running, flipfire agrees (and so will everyone else here, probably).

You'll also most likely fry the RAM and maybe even the RAM controller on your mobo.

Well, if he sprays the ram with some liquid nitrogen and rips it out quickly enough, pops it into a special reader/computer, he can retrieve any passwords/encryption keys that are currently in memory.

    Absolute genius hacker :D

Except RAM is volatile storage and when it loses its charge, it also looses its memory (oh yes the irony.)

To be prudent, always make sure to shutdown the computer and remove all power sources (power adapter and battery) before working on the innards of a computer. Remember to ground yourself on an unpainted metal surface with your hands beforehand.

When in doubt about hot-swappable components, shut down first. Almost all computer parts are not hot-swappable (especially memory).

The computer is still on in standby mode (and hibernation is still not a good idea)!

No need. You basically got all the tech related replies you need. Standby is not fully shutoff...
