Interesting idea, although I don't really see it getting any traction. I'm pretty sure to integrate a backlit keyboard into a ThinkPad, you'd have to make a compromise somewhere else to fit it in.

Why would you need the ThinkLight if you have a backlit keyboard, and vice versa?

Does anyone here think that a backlit keyboard would ruin the elegant, no-nonsense look of the TP? Because I do.

You’d have to replace the mute/volume push buttons with touch-sensitive buttons for a backlit keyboard design to work. Better add color LED indicator lights to the buttons for reference while you’re at it. All that wouldn’t look good with a plain black plastic case – need to change it to glossy or a sleek aluminum. That would really contrast against the matte screen; better make it to glossy also. The touchpad looks boring now – better add some design cues to liven it up and make it stand out. Now what is that ugly red thing in the middle of my slick, backlit keyboard? Get rid of it!

On second thought…meh, it would turn it into something it’s not.

A backlit keyboard wouldn't look good introduced in a blan black casing like a ThinkPad uses. Backlit keyboards are frilly addons for gaming or multimedia orientated laptops that are known for their eye appeal like the Apple MacBook Pro and Dell XPS.

I disagree. Having the "white" part of the keys glow a dull white for readability in the dark would be great for non-touch typists. I'm not saying to make them friggen sun-like, but a little glow so a tap-typist can see the keys would be cool, I think, and not detract from the overall feel of a TP.
