I have to purchase an IBM laptop.

I am not sure what the best one to get is?
    I can spend arround $3K

I was looking at the t60, but it does not seem to have much in the way of ports (only vga), and has no com port, and no firewire

Just wondering what the best bang for my buck will be.

depends what you need to do with it. If you are constantly travelling the best is probably a X series. If you want/need widescreen, Z is the choice. The Ts will offer in most cases the best technology they have (FireGL graphics, Flexfiew screen), or if you don't need that stuff and it will primarily sit on a desk, get an R and put some money in another toy.
