Hi All...
I am considering buying the T400. I have posted the answers to the questions regarding buying laptops on the approriate thread which may be accessed by this link. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=431852
Therein a forum user drew my attention to the R400. When I checked the specs of both, they seem to be the same - the only difference is that the T400 has 320 GB HDD, while the R400 has 250 GB.
So, aside from this what is the basic difference between these two machines? Is the weight the same?
What accounts for the difference in price? Build quality?

The R400 weighs more, is thicker, and in general "less elegant" as compared to the T400. Configuration-wise, it lacks some option higher-end parts, such as discrete switchable graphics, which is only available on the T400. Build quality should be the same.
For full specifications, look at the Tabook PDF file - the link is in the sticky in this subforum. -

Its good to keep in mind that the R400 is closer to the T400 than the R500 is to the T500 chassis wise too.

I prefer the T series over the R any day. Even if someone only needed integrated graphics, the roll cage on the T series makes it so much worth it. I think quality wise, the T series is better as well

Yeah...thanks, I read that link. -

So, essentially, are you folks saying that aside from the form factor there is no difference between the R400 and T400? Enough for a INR 20,000 or USD 416 or GBP 250 difference in cost?
Edit: And, is the build quality difference also worth that much? -

I looked on USA lenovo site, and the t400 is actually cheaper than the r400...
Are you in the UK? -

Nopes, in India, which kinda sucks when one wants to buy laptops!!!!! -

well if that is the case, and if you are budget minded , I guess 400 dollars do go a long way.
R series for sure if the difference is 250 pounds
In no way is paying 400 dollars extra for the t series acceptable. None. Go for the R series -

Is there a significant difference in weight? I am and am going to be highly mobile...so weight does matter. My last 15.4 Acer almost wrenched my shoulder off!!!! -

Well in terms of weight... T series is lighter as previous posts have mentioned.
It is about 5.4 pounds (2.5 kilo) to start off not including any extra options/batteries. Wheres the T series is 3.9 pounds. Not too much of a difference.
Again all this information is on Lenovo's site -

Yeah...ok. Thanks. 2.5 kgs sounds better that what I am lugging around now. Because I also carry a minimum of two books and a whole sheaf of papers. Aside from the power cable, and an external harddrive, no additional accessories to carry though.
So, I guess the T400 is final! Now I will place my order and will have to wait for 8-10 days and it is this last part which sucks!!!!
BTW, the T400 has the touch screen nav thing...doesn't it? -
No, it does not. You are thinking of the T400s, which has the option of a multi-touch enabled touchscreen - which obviously costs more than the regular screen.
-
Stewie Griffin Notebook Consultant
wow how much did you end up paying for the T series?
No only the t400s with multi touch screen does -
lineS of flight Notebook Virtuoso
Yikes! I was really looking forward to that multi-touch screen function...the specs for the T400s available in India is as below:

Note that there is a 30K (in Indian currency) difference between the T400 and the T400s. But then the T400s has a smaller drive, but everything (apart from the touch screen) looks the same...well the processor is different in the T400s. -

Thanks. But in the best of Indian traditions, the period of 'courtship' is far too long. its gonna be 8-10 days before I can get intimate with the T400, but as in cases like these, I can't wait to get my hands on it!!!! Thanks. -
You'd be hard pressed to tell them apart right next to them in my opinion.
Both the 14" models have the roll cage. Only the 15" R series lacks the roll cage. I'd grant you it's a more divergent from it's T series cousin than the R400 in terms of thickness and use of plastic. I think the R series offers excellent value provided you don't need the stuff that's only offered on the T series like WWAN, the GPUs, high nit LED LCD, etc. -
I don't know what configuratins are offered in the rest of the world, but in Europe you can have WWAN, ATI-GPU and for educational models even WXGA+-LED-displays (standard, not the high-nit version) with your R400.
-
i can get that too in Australia, in fact i have one R400 with that configuration minus the ATI gpu, since i already got a T400 with that configuration.
What is the difference between...
