I didn't see a thread or poll on this topic. But, this is a good indicator of o/s, number of processes running, cpu speed, and overall PC integrity. Please post your o/s and boot time info.

    Alacrity

EDIT: Thanks, Tim, for the typo correction. And, yes, by "boot time" I meant the time from pushing the "on" button to having the last process finish loading......going into essentially "idle" mode. I used a watch with a second hand. For those with < 30 second boot time, it would be interesting to know their primary method for obtaining the quick start-up.

By boot time do you mean to log-on screen or loaded desktop?

I fixed the poll for you. For your boot time measurements are you just using a clock to read the time? Or do you guys use a program?

Was wondering that... Conversely I use a SSD which helps. My start time in Vista64Bit is around 26 seconds right now from push of the button to desktop complete with internet confirmed and no SSD activity.

For those interested, you will find that the tweaking thread in my sig block tweaks a number of different areas to reduce your start time significantly.

27 seconds running XP Pro (power button to all system tray icons loaded). 36 processes loaded at startup.

I disabled some services as well as defragged my boot files via command line. AVG as antivirus and Windows Firewall as firewall. Windows Defender also starts up.

CPU is T7300 and 60GB 7200rpm Hitachi HDD.

    AC Power.

This poll isn't particularly meaningful unless a lot of variables are defined.

Measured time interval is the time between power On with AC power for Vista 32 to last icon appearance in system tray- Standard Lenovo Install, for 4GB and 7800 t61p with 7200 rpm Travelstar -200 gb. SQL Server 2005 loaded also.

    35 seconds.

Wow. My T61p is only 10 days old and I already have 88 processes running on Task Manager.

Guess that is why I have close to a 2 minute start-up time for XP Pro.

Without taking the processes off the PC (I have virtualmachine and other software I use at times), what is the latest software than I can use to take the process off of start-up/boot but still have the software available via program or icon to start-up when needed? Or, is services.msc and the disable process on each line item still used/recommended?

    Thanks for any feedback.

I have the same system as yours. and mine boots around 70 seconds.

I have done the clean install etc, and stop all non neccessarily services, defrag boot file.

Mind to tell me how you get to 35 seconds?

From Thinkpad screen to vista progress bar screen takes about 25 seconds already....

    Anyone ? help?

    yeap,

First of all I have to apologize, that was unhibernate time.

From cold boot my system is sixty seconds... with almost full bloatware.

What I do is that I keep my system partition defragmented and and I've cut out some bloatware. To be specific the adobe Photoshop update watcher, the realplayer update watcher, Automatic quicktime detachment and Windows Defender. I'm not religious about my system but I do check it about once a month to insure that no unnecessary software is started.

How could one notice if all they have is an ultranav system?

Has there been any additional Ultra-Nav updates since the t61p has come out?

i did a clean installed with one of the guide here in nbr . And followed the steps clearly with which driver should install first before another. Everything seems to boot pretty quickly and loads the very last icon in system tray almost instantly before i install the ultranav driver. Once ultranav driver installed, system tray loads eg 5 out of 7 applications and around 10 seconds later, the last two applications. You can use ie for surfing in the mean time tho.

    Any idea whats going on??

    at present,

    - wifi - power - sidebar - saferemove - mcafee 2008 - bluetooth - language

    once after clean install,

cant really remember , but sidebar loads after a while (after installation of ultranav driver and without mcafee installation) .

Everything load instantly before ultranav driver installed..

"And what would we talk about?"

Why the touchpad is "almost there". Sometimes it just does some inexplicable things.

The other thing that we'd discuss is the cursor jumping around in Word and how the touch/pad ultranav might relate to that.

Just wanted to know if thats the case for everyone... if it is then that's fine.

Is too obvious that ultranav driver slow down other applications to boot, or maybe is something else that i am not aware of.

    Understandable.

What do you mean by "almost there"? Which version of Word does it jump around? I have 2003 and it works ok for me.

@yeap: Are you talking about the driver or the utility? http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67853#Mouse

    Hmmmm. I use 2003 on the T61p.

As a developer I spend most of my time in an editor (not word). I have small fingers, am dextrous but sometimes I've seen it grab an cut swaths of text when I was just moving the cursor with the touchpad. I rarely use the little red button.

Several people here have reported the erratic cursor and when I questioned them closely, it was only with Word.

It might be the version of the driver. The trackpoint/touchpad was usable before the driver right? Maybe you can just install the UltraNav utility only since the driver from the Lenovo website is probably optional.

If you are using Vista, I suggest utilizing Event Viewer for comparable boot times.

Disabled ultranav driver didnt show any results. i think ultranav utilities slow boot time down also..

I had a boot time of about 40s until I loaded AVG free antivirus and ZoneAlarm firewall. Those two put me at about 1m 15s after installing and much much longer if AVG is getting an update at startup.

hm, I can make my XP to boot in less than 30 sec, but what's the point ..

with T7500, 2gb ram, nvidia 140, 160gb 7200rpm, and all my stuff loaded, it takes around 1 min. I have around 50 processes.

    miro,

It's kind of a geek thing. Technical tune-up and putzing fun.

But, you are right in your priorities. I actually have 88 processes and now am over 3 minutes in boot time from AC on to last pop up icon (Spysweeper). I started to eliminate unwanted processes but then thought twice about it. AFTER boot up, my T61p runs like a banshee and I decided that was more important.

But, you know, it's a little technical fun. And, you saw the post on the SSD boot up. Quite nice and high end technical putzing.

    Don't forget to have fun.

    Alacrity :)
