After using a few different models my dream setup would be:

The battery life and performance of the T410 in the rugged slimmer housing of the T400, with HDMI instead of a display port and the keyboard from a T61.
    :)

Oh wait is that the machine called T410s?

The X200/X300 are also very nice, but either too expensive or lacking the trackpad and DVD drive.

x201 have trackpad now, and if you use dvd drive you can get the ultrabase or an external usb dvd drive.

You can get a simple DP-HDMI converter if you need HDMI out. Most of the current HDMI port on laptop only allows for WUXGA resolution, which is only enough for a 24 inch LCD. DP can drive a 30 inch LCD at WQXGA, and there is no royalty to be paid by the laptop manufacturer.

If they took the thinness of the T4x machines and married it the structural integrity of the T60 machines, that would be a good place to start. Throw in a a 14" IPS/AFFS SXGA+ LCD. The 14" SXGA+ form factor is the perfect blend of portability, real estate and performance. Toss in a decent switchable GPU and a maybe a Blu-ray drive. That's my perfect ThinkPad. If anyone ever makes that machine, they've got a customer in me.

I have to say I my X200 is pretty good too. It's very light and portable with a very good screen. I probably don't need the portability, but still like the smaller form factor. I'd trade it if someone ever made a SXGA+ version of it.

    13" 1280x800 resolutionv with 1440x900 optional
    Standard voltage Core i5
    4 GBs of RAM
    500gb HD
nVidia 320m or ATI Radeon 5450 switchable graphics
8-9 hours realistic battery life with nine-cell

I'll second ZaZ on the 14" 1400x1050 IPS display. I wish there were such a display on a Thinkpad. I'll also take a Nvidia Quadro 570 without the hardware failure. A 2.00Ghz Core 2 Duo would suit me for a processor, blu-ray writer, and a dvorak keyboard.

Hm... if I could have my cake and eat it too:

12.1" 16:10 display, WXGA. Has to be IPS/AFFS or some other better, non-TN panel.
    Core i5 540M
Switchable with some sort of light ATI GPU, perhaps HD5450? I won't ever willingly own any Nvidia cards after some troubles with my old M1730, they've lost my business completely.
9-cell battery, hopefully having a runtime of 8-9 hours on integrated graphics
Provisions for SD card, eSATA, and ExpressCard/34
Ditch the VGA output for a DP.

That would leave me a pretty happy camper.

You're on the right track. I like my T410s but could wish for only 2 things:

    • a higher quality screen compared to the junk it shipped with
    • better battery life or design for a 6-8 hour possible capability

My dream Thinkpad would be a revised X301 series (I think 13" is the perfect size for a laptop) with
    1. A bigger SSD drive option
    2. Back-lit keyboard (the Thinklight is nice too )
    3. a bit longer battery life
    4. a nice IPS screen is a must
    5. not to be over $5,000 hahahaha

That's about it I guess. I think the X301 is the perfect machine as it is. I only have the 64GB version, as I very rarely use it. When I do use it, I always have a huge smile on my face. You can defiantly feel/tell a difference between the X301 and the T61.

I want the X202 with Core i5-2520M or Core i7-2620M, 3 Light Peak ports, slightly slimmer than the X201, and non soldered on cpu (for upgrade to 22nm Ivy Bridge).

non-soldered CPU and slightly slimmer than the X201 in the upcoming X202? I guess that is possible if Intel shrinks the CPU packaging.

Like most people I like the T410s form factor. It also has to have a nice screen (IPS 1600X900). Rubber coating like the x301 and older Thinkpads. Finally I want the new thinkpad edge keyboard (I know alot of person going to disagree with me in this one, but it is personal preference).

If the T410s had better battery life and a 14" 1440x900 IPS panel (16:10), I'd be on that faster than a fat person on cake :D (don't be offended if you have a BMI over 25 or like cake please! not judging here! ;))

After using a half broken 600x, i found that the keyboard on it, is far superior to most of the recent Thinkpads that i have used.

Just like Ferrari is known for its performance and handling superiority. Thinkpads have been known for its robustness and keyboard quality. While Lenovo have tried its best to maintain the robustness of Thinkpad through magnesium rollcage and CFRP/GFRP casing, etc, Lenovo have slightly lost focus on the tactility of the Thinkpad keyboard, and instead opted to pursue other aspects of keyboard design (i.e. gaps between keys and weight of keyboard, etc).

While, Lenovo don't have much pull with the LCD manufacturers, they do however have a heavy influence on the keyboard manufacturer. So maybe Lenovo should realign their focus on their keyboard design to produce an industry best laptop keyboard.

So i guess this is one of the dream feature that i would love the future Thinkpad to have.

I have a X301, and the keyboard on it is pretty good on par with the keyboard i got on the T41, which is the laptop that i consistently use for typing up long word document. However, the keyboard on the 600x that i have used at my friend's house is a bit better than the one on the X301, but that is a personal opinion, which may differ between different users.

Having said that, Lenovo have no official plan to bring out a successor to the X30x laptops, and the current keyboards on the T410, T510, W510 is nowhere as good. Hopefully, Lenovo will bring back keyboards that has superior tactility and feel as compared to the T410, etc.

Is this the case with current X201? Just wonder as this would be amazing :p because I might replace my X201 when SB cpus comes along

Need better screen res (VS2010 is not good at 1200x800)
A tad more gpu power so I can play my only game SC2 (Without DIY Vidock)

Since we're in the business of reviving threads:

Put a Core i7, Mobility Radeon HD 4850 or better, eSATA, horizontally-stacked USB ports, and an IPS screen in my T500 chassis and I'll be happy. That's it. Just two age-based features and three usability features.

I thought I had already posted in this thread but it must've been another thread with the same topic.

A W700ds - sans digitizer; add a second GPU (HD6970Mx2); add an improved Game Zone pad from the Y700 to the left of the keyboard; and finally change the logo to ThinkPwnd.

Minus its video, screen type, and 16:9 screen aspect ratio. Well, I guess I did leave out something after all.

You realize the t500 and w510 chassis dimensions aren't hugely different, right?

    14.68" x 9.65" x 1.26-1.41

Yeah, I'm definitely keeping that in mind as an option should I decide I can't give up the comfort of sofa PC gaming. I'm actually going to be building a new desktop within the next year, so it's all about how much I like playing while reclined or spread out on a large chair.

On a different note, every time I travel, I realize that the T500 really exceeds the limits of in-flight computing convenience. It's on the heavy side, it makes my camera/laptop backpack thick enough to not fit under some seats, and I've never been able to open the lid all the way in an airline seat, but I wouldn't change a thing considering 14" or smaller laptops aren't usually configured for gaming or even mid-resolution graphics work.

    Dream Thinkpad?

    - Thinkpad X200 base
    - 12.1" RGB LED *matte* screen
    - Intel IGP + nVidia 335GT switchable gfx (NOT optimus)
    - HDMI or DisplayPort
    - NO modem
    - Sound on/off LED on the LED board
    - Better, stereo, speakers

I think that's it. :) X200 rocks as it is right now, though.

My favorite lap top, would have the rugedness of my T61 but have half the weight. It would be as fast or faster than the t61. It would be a 15 inch machine. It would had WAN to the internet. It would have an SSd. Oh, and about 8 hours of battery life.

X301 with decent processor, switchable graphics, ultra-bay that takes 2nd hdd.

    T410s with decent screen.

Since nothing like this exists at the moment the T400 is staying. I'll trade an extra 1lb for all of the above.

I'd prefer SXGA+ too. It was really painful switching to the T400 from my T60; led screen was the only reason I did it.

+1 I could do without the switchable graphics. But it MUST have the same build quality as the X301 and yeah...a 13" screen!

Not sure if Ive posted this or not:
    Either 11.6 or 12.5 X series.
Slim, with slim SSD card like the ones they are going to introduce now in some refreshed TP's
Lightweight, max 1.3Kg with either flush 9 cell battery or flush 6 cell and optional slice to attach to the bottom of laptop, no ugly bulge underneath the back of the laptop as with current rare slice battery for T410.
Powerful quad core with either APU or discrete switchable graphics, dont care about gaming but light gaming capabilities would be fine (AMD APU's can do that!).
Long battery life wit 6 cell 8-9h and with 9 cell 11-13hours of normal use vs current 4-5/6-8h.
SATA 6, USB3/lightpeak, newest expresscard, SD card reader.

Oh, forgot to add that 1600x900 screen on 12.5" is a must, 1366x768 is a no go for me!

    - 13" Screen
    - Decent Graphics card with switchable graphics
    - 9 cell battery that doesn't protrude from the back
    - 1440x900 16:10 screen (I like this on my T410)
    - A good quality screen! Has to have better viewing angles
    - No creaky plastics on the palm wrest
    - Not too heavy or too thick
    - Price: ~$1200

    I would be a happy person :)
