OK here is what I need. I think it was simple but it appears impossible. My needs:
12 to 14 inch screen
HD of 250 GB
SILENT machine
A screen that is legible (1280 x 800 ?)
A screen that can do business and video playback with no hick-ups ( a lot of long flights )
A fast chip for the above
Webcam and preferably good enough speakers for Skype (business need)
No overheating or noise since I cannot stand it
Good keyboard (but that is a given with Lenovo)
No need for firewire etc; only need 2 USB
So far a Samsung NC10 netbook has come close ... but Lenovo seems to have problems across categories and no perfect machine. Thanks

What is wrong with T400 or X200?
-
X200 with a P8600? I got the one in my sig for $800 with the dock, so you can find good deals if you look around.

T400 and/or X200.
You won't get better speced laptops for the money IMO. -

An X200 seems to fit the bill nicely.

Firstly, Samsung NC10 netbook doesn't meet most of your stated requirements.
it have:
-10.1 inch LCD with 1024 x 600 screen.
-Small hdd
-No high def video playback without skipping.
-Bad quality speakers
-Atom CPU is a very slow chip, but it is cheap to produce, which is why it is used in Netbook
-Atom cpu does have a tendency to overheat in a small laptop package, especially when you run the fan in silent mode
-Bad keyboard which is a given in a Samsung machine especially in a netbook format.
-Low battery time with the available battery option.
...... i am speechless with the fact that you find a netbook to be your close to ideal machine, when it meets only 2 of your 11 requirements or so....... And you say Lenovo has no perfect machine and have problems across the category.
What you should be looking at is the X200, T400s, etc. -

Those who have an X200 I have read so much on here about video playback issues and ghosting etc... have they been solved? I mentoined the Samsung NC10 since I have not seen a Lenovo LCD that comes close to the clarity and brightness of that little matte screen and^excellent video playback when I do want to watch movies on a flight. Yes speakers are not good but loud enough for Skype in a hotel room. The webcam is also very clear picture. Thinking about T400 as T400s again seems to have poor quality screen.

I'd looks at the X200s. Think of it in terms of the X200 tablet type hardware and but with the X200 form factors. I mention this because the battery life on that machine with the 9cell will be competitive with the battery life from that samsung and it's large capacity battery. It'll handing nearly any media file you want to throw at it including Bluray. Certain models have an WVGA+ 1440x900 LCD as well. Pay attention to which one you buy.
The X200 is good. I just prefer -
I'd say T400.
You could always wait a week or two (after CES 2010) and see what new offerings Lenovo will have.
On second thought, if you are using these on planes a lot, you might like the X200 better. I find 14" screens are difficult to use on economy class tray tables. A netbook without one of those Broadcom chips won't have what it takes to play video.
What should I buy ?
