i need some opinion -- i'm going to a postgraduate school and i need a laptop now. my school have great offer on Thinkpad, which i'm really interesting in, but confused between these two models... I will used it for usual daily works, gaming (i'm not really a heavy gamers, but i like to be able to play CoD or HL2 smoothly).

    Here are the configs:

    Z61M
    Core Duo T2500 2GHz
    DDR2 RAM 2x512MB (667MHz)
    HDD 80GB (5400RPM)
    ATI Mobility Radeon X1400
    15.4" TFT WSXGA+(1680x1050)
    Price: USD 1,400

    T60P
    Core Duo T2500 2GHz
    1GB (667MHz)DDR2 RAM
    HDD 100GB (7200RPM)
    ATI Mobility Radeon X1400
    15" TFT UXGA (1600x1200) -- flexview
    Price: USD 1,800

    thanks...

The two main reasons you'd go for the Z61m would be the widescreen and cheaper price. Otherwise, i'd go with T60p. I envy the flexview... :(

Yep agree, except i dont envy the UXGA... text is too tiny sometimes.
They're both heavy but the Z61m is too heavy to lug around campus IMO
All in all, i'd get the T60 unless price is an issue - the extra $400 isn't chump change!
Both are incredible prices tho, less than employee cost even wow

yeah... the price is awesome... that's why i'm interested... if i have to pay standard price, i won't even consider thinkpad... :p

btw, do the ATI FireGL is good for gaming? I read that it's the update of X1600... anybody try it yet?

I read some issues with FireGL when gaming (check older threads) but I'm assuming that its better than x1400 overall.

Just curious, among the two 15" notebooks, which one is lighter? Is a 15" non-widescreen notebook comfortable to carry around ?

Between those two, I would opt for the Z61m. They are solid as rocks. As has been noted, text on the UXGA screen will be small. The Z is a bit heavier and the screen is not quite as good.

T60p is definitely not worth $400 more.
I would go for z61m or z61p if weight is not an issue

Have you considered z61t. It's around 4.3 lbs when t60p is more than 5.6 or 5.7 I guess. Not sure.
