Hey everyone. I bought this T61p about 4 years ago and man did we have a trip haha, but now I will be getting a new laptop and am wondering what to do with this one since it stills runs? I was thinking about throwing Ubuntu on it and try making it some sort of server but am unsure on how to do that or what that would help with. any thoughts on that? Also if you could lay out some sort of directions that would be amazing haha.

Any other thoughts on what to do with it?

I am in Architecture and do a lot of CAD/3d work but also game on WoW and TF2. (some background information for the computer)

    Thanks in advance

OH and I wont be using the T61p for my CAD or gaming anymore just so now once says I cant run CAD in ubuntu lol

Use it until the Nvidia chip fails (and yes it will fail, only time will tell).

Ubuntu is probably one of the easiest distros to get started with, since there's such a large user base online. Just simply download the Ubuntu (desktop version) and install it. Or, if you 're not sure you want to leave Windows yet, give Wubi a try.

Or, if none of those sound good, you could always put it in a box and mail it off to me ;)

I'd suggest Mint as the Unity interface can be a bit annoying. I don't know that it's foregone conclusion that the nVidia card will fail. Toss a SSD in there and throw Linux on it. It'll fly. My R60e with Linux and a 16GB SSD feels a lot faster than my X220i a lot of the time.

Mint's not bad as a starting point either, but few distros can come close to Ubuntu's community. As for the Unity interface, it's simple to disable--I did so as soon as I updated. That said, though, if you're new to Linux, you may like it.
