I was just wondering, on your laptop, what track point cap do you use?? Cause, my t400 came with the usual stuff. Laptop, battery, charger, papers, lol. And then i saw this little baggy with three other two other track point caps. So which one do you use?
And i was just wondering, sometimes, when your using the track point, is it not stable? Sometimes when i use the left click(for the track point) it causes the mouse to move up and down sometimes...Is this normal?
Edit: sorry bout the name choices, i described them as best i could. lol.
-
You presume everyone uses the trackpoint. That would be wrong.
-
Let's have the official terminology, shall we?
Classic Dome Cap.
Soft Dome Cap.
Soft Rim Cap.
One Big Happy Family
Although my X61 TrackPoint has the Soft Dome Cap on, set at the highest sensitivity which I enjoy using, I mainly use a wireless laser mouse with a gel wrist mousepad.
-
i use this one
and i also love this
it just lookin funny -
While the Classic Dome is my favorite, they get dirty too easily and wear down to fast. Soft Dome is a close second, so I usually use that.
Soft Rim Cap is just a term that sounds freakishly wrong. -
this is normal. the trackpoint stick recalibrates itself once in a while, resulting in the cursor moving on the screen without input from the user.
trackpad users could change the trackpoint cap even if they don't use it. heck, some people might even remove the cap altogether. i highly doubt this poll is for either of these groups though.
-
If I were a trackpad user I would probably just remove the cap.
On a side note - anyone find it annoying that the trackpoint leaves a smudge on the screen when you close the lid? -
I love this one:
It's far better on the finger for extended use.
The classic dome is also nice because of it's precision, but it can be fatiguing. -
If you don't use the track point, then i would think that this thread wouldn't apply to the user that uses a track pad. Right?
And my apologies, i didn't know they had pics/names to them. I guess i shoulda done more research.
hax0rJimDuggan: nope i dont get that problem and i use the soft rim cap. -
Hi Jim,
I noticed this on my previous X60 too, despite Matt Kohut's assurance on ThinkPad's Display Reinforcement.
Since then, I've always place a stiff card over my X61's keyboard before I close the lid to prevent the TrackPoint cap from leaving its impression on the screen. -
I chose Round mushroom:
Soft Rim Cap.
It's my favorite I think, have never used it before and quite like on my T61. -
Agreed, my first Thinkpad had the classic dome, but once it turns black and shiny, it's not so appealing...
-
That's not the "mushroom" one...
-
You're right, anyways I've always used the 'mushroom' on my T42p for the 2.5 years I've had it.
-
I hate using the trackpoint. I'm a three finger pad-man.

I've sorta fallen in love with the soft rim cap
-
I used to be like that too until i gave the track point a try. My ultimate lazyness forced me to use the track point cause i didn't have to lift my finger. lol. That and the mouse keys for the trackpad are frickin tiny compared to the trackpad mouse keys which have ridges do you can feel for them.
-
I switched mine to the soft rim cap as soon as I got it, and I've been happy with it ever since. With the other ones, if I press very hard (which happens often), my finger slides off the TrackPoint.
-
I've been trying out all the caps. The classic dome one has the most grip or friction. The other two caps, the soft dome and the soft rim cap, gets slippery after a while....
-
I like the soft dome. I tried the soft rim, but I have small hands and fingertips. If my fingernails grow near the end of my finger, they catch.
-

I'm surprised the majority prefer the soft dome. It is the least comfortable and most boring for me.
How much effort does it take to make them in more colors?
-
You can buy them in a variety of colors! For example, you can buy a three pack with red, raspberry (purple), and green on eBay.
You also should be able to use caps from a Dell Latitude, Fujitsu Tablet PC, HP/Compaq business PC, or Elitebook. However, in my experience the IBM caps are a little better and I've never seen the "soft rim" style from the other manufacturers. -
lol
Though I have always kinda liked the blue color of the HP trackpoint. -
A golden/orange/yellow should look nice...
I think the fuzzy classic one is the cutest
What track point cap do you use?
