Couldn't I just connect the monitor directly to a X61 Tablet?

Time to dock vs connecting the vga, usb keyboard/mouse cables, ac adapter and of course extra ports.

Optical drive, charging an extra battery...

more ports ie DVI, etc

I like the ultrabase. I have a home office and a work office, both with external monitors/keyboards/mice, and it's very convenient to hit the undock button, grab it and go when I need to go to a meeting or switch back and forth. I don't use the optical drive all that much but when I do it's nice to have one handy somewhere, displayport is nice, and I've actually used the extra battery charger a few times in the few weeks I've had the x200.
Granted, the real question is, is this convenience worth the cost of the ultrabase? To me it is, but I didn't have to pay for it so take my opinion with a grain of salt ;P -

The X200 Ultrabase has a DisplayPort, but no DVI.

Which is the same thing as far as you are concerned (get an adapter).

What's the point of an Ultrabase?
