I was just curious as to why it seems as though so many people on this forum have negative things to say about the Edge series. I guess most of what I have seen is that it isn't a "true" or "real" Lenovo, and is too "consumer" oriented.

I just bought an E420s earlier this evening. Two of the people I have college courses with have the E420 and I have used their laptops on numerous occasions. I was very surprised with the overall feel and quality, which ultimately led me to buy one for myself since the laptop I currently have is...let's just say very bad :D

Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, but I am just curious as to what it is exactly about these machines that garners so much scorn from geeks out there. I won't kid myself or anyone else out there that this is built to business-grade specifications or has some of the nicer features of the more expensive laptops, but for the audience it's aimed at I think it does a pretty good job. I honestly couldn't find another laptop at the Edge's price point that could compare with it. For what I will be doing with it (learning Linux, building virtual networks in my Cisco classes, creating presentations, etc.), I think it will handle the job just fine.

By the way, for any of you out there who have the E420s, let me know your thoughts on it.

I recently test drove a E420 not the E420s and I loved it and ordered one for myself as well. Bought one just today :D

Anyway I don't see a problem with the edge series. Originally I had my eye on a T420 but the price premium was not worth it in my opinion because of what the machine will be used for. It won't be traveling much and most of the time it would be for couch surfing. If I got the T420, its magnesium alloy cage would kinda be wasted on just my couch surfing alone :).

My college laptop was a Pentium II 233mhz thinkpad, when I used its keyboard I fell in love with it. Fast froward to today, this new E420 will be replacing my aging lenovo 3000 g530 laptop. I can care less what other people think about the Edge series as long as I like using it, its all that matters.

Yeah I was sold after using the E420 that my classmates have. I don't care what people say about the laptop, I just am curious as to what makes people think it's not a "real" or "true" Lenovo. Say what they will though, the quality for the price point is unbeatable as far as I'm concerned.

Let me know how you like your laptop :)

    1. Poor keyboard
    2. Glossy screen
    3. No roll cage protection
    so on and so forth.

People have different preferences and I would say most of the 'hate' directed to TP Edge are from hardcore, long-standing 'traditional' thinkpad users who can't do without the above features. If you find the Edge palatable despite these 'flaws' I don't see any reason why you shouldn't buy one/ be happy with your purchase.

That said, if you've used a 'traditional' thinkpad like X220/T420s I think you'll share the same sentiments as the 'haters' ^^

Oh, and one more thing: the edge isn't actually much cheaper than other thinkpads (you can get a T420 at $500-600 with coupons) these days so that is another reason why people don't think getting it is a good idea.

I would say the keyboard is just as good, but 6 rows (which really sucks). For the pricing, the E420 is $200 cheaper than the T420 base, but it comes with 4GB of RAM and a lot of other things that would be upgrades to the base T420.

If you are happy with what the Edge gives/doesn't give you, buy it and be happy. If you aren't, there is such thing as freedom of speech and people seem to use it often.

I basically bought my e220s because it was the right balance of thin+light+powerful+inexpensive. Some might say that I should have considered the X220 (and I did), but it was not as thin or inexpensive as the e220s. I had zero interest in considering any other Lenovo laptops. The only other machines on the market that I would have considered are the Sony SA, and the Z... but they're made by Sony, and over double the price when configured in a desirable manner.

This machine really checks all the right boxes for me. I love the styling, the keyboard, and I'm fine with the glossy screen. I don't know why, but I just see right through any glare -- and I never turn my backlight up beyond 40% or so.

I guess people are frustrated that it is so close to being what they want. The size and basic specs are close to perfect.

I'm looking for something like the e420s but with:

    -Discrete graphics in the US
    -Matte screen
    -USB 3.0 or express-card

I don't need IPS, a high powered GPU or Blue-Ray. So at least for me the e420s is a near miss. I don't "hate" the e420s, but I am frustrated that it could have been exactly what I was looking for.

Most people in this Lenovo subforum are ThinkPad diehards (me included, but I try to see the other side). I have used other Edge laptops, x120e and the X1 and for me it is just too different. Even the newer ThinkPads (T410,T420) feel different than the Core 2 Duo ThinkPads. The lid latch, roll cage, 7 row keyboard, ThinkLight, trackpoint, ultra bay, they are what make a ThinkPad a ThinkPad. The Edge is just marketed towards small businesses due to the price range.
