Whenever I power up my X41, it makes these sounds which I can only describe as two dice hitting each other (or being shook in someones hand) or something like that. It's tough for me to describe. But I know this sound is supposed to be telling me something and is not indicative of something wrong with the fan or harddrive, but I can't seem to find out what it is online.

If anyone knows what this is and can explain it to me, that'd be super.

    Thanks.

Notebooks usually only have a few moving parts, Hard drive, Fan, and CD/DVD drive. Try to pinpoint which one of those devices may be making the noise.

Well, the thing is that I'm pretty sure it's a system noise, if that makes sense, programmed into the notebook by IBM/Lenovo, that has a specific purpose (like it's the noise equivalent of a flashing low-battery light or something), I just don't know what it is.

    Can the noise be muted?

Well, I never did figure out what the strange noise (described by some as a "clak clak" or even a light "crack crack") coming out of my Thinkpad X41 is.

But it occurs all the times, randomly, and definitely isn't a loose part or something rolling around inside the notebook. It's a noise produced to indicate something - I just don't know what it's indicating.

PLEASE if you know anything about this let me know! Thanks!

Oh yeah! It CAN'T be muted!

It may just be the Windows Startup sound that can be disabled and does not signal an error. There are a lot of noises that Windows makes for various (non-alarming) occurrences that I disabled because I found them annoying. By disabling them, I don't have to mute my whole system to avoid hearing them.

Go to Control Panel (classic view)/Sounds. There is a tab called Sounds. There is a checkbox to disable the startup sound. And you can also go through the list in the box to disable sounds for some or all of the listed events (by choosing "None" under Sounds (at the bottom).
