I purchased a very similar build (see signature) for $1923. However, this includes many warranties. I'd pay $1500, maybe $1600, for that without warranties.

eBay is sometimes hard to figure. I have bought and sold items for more or less than I thought it is worth. I guess it is worth whatever price someone is willing to pay at that moment in time.

Here's the thing...the guy is local to me so i drive down and pick it up. He a a bunch as they were owned by a business that was bought out before they were ever used.

It comes with 3yr. accidental damage and extended warranties. The start date was Jan 10th, 2007 and I get Windows XP Pro. I get the 9-cell battery and and extra battery.

How much is the warranty worth? I think i really want the 14" SXGA but am worried that it wont be offered in lieu of the WXGA screens. I'm going to be enrolling in an MBA program soon as im only 22 and and I want a solid laptop that will last me ~ 3 years. I wont really game, just word, internet, music, maybe a movie or two here or there, but all I see the widescreen as is more to lug around from class to class. I never use the extra real estate in Firefox as none of the web pages are made for widescreen anyway.

    What do you all think?

I have always prefered SXGA+ to WXGA+. It is almost as wide and much taller which as you've seen is much more useful for things like Office and Internet. I guess if you watch a lot of movies or do Excel spreadsheets with lots of columns widescreen makes more sense. The other area where widescreen has an advantage is viewing documents side by side. I personally think that WSXGA+ is the minimum for doing this comfortably which for the time being you'll won't see on a 14" notebook.

I think I actually prefer the SXGA screen right now...and seeing how it is not offered in the new T61, this is another reason why I'm considering this deal.

    Any other opinions?

Just watch, in another couple of years, they will take the widescreen and "add" to the top, effectively reverting back to 4:3. Then advertise how much more useful the "new" screen dimension is. LOL. It's all marketing gimmicks.

It depends on the user needs. Consumers can better take advantage of widescreens as opposed to the mostly business-oriented laptops of the past.

I always preferred a standard aspect ratio screen. For most webpages and office documents, the height is much more important than the width.

Case in point, take a look at this thread, imagine how much less scrolling you would be doing if you were viewing this on a standard aspect ratio screen.

    Thats my point exactly!

My warranty information is as follows...

    Description:
This product has a three year limited warranty which includes a ThinkPlus warranty upgrade. This product is entitled to parts and labor and is entitled to on-site service. This machine is also entitled to the Thinkpad Protection Service. Customers may call the PC HelpCenter for more information.

How much is this warranty worth? I get it with the PC for $1000. Is it worth it? Or should I wait until the T61 SXGA is available?

Also, ive heard that that model will only come with the Intel950 or whatever integrated graphics. Do you think it will be available with a dedicated card?

This one has the 128mb X1400 which is surely better than the new integrated ones right?

I've read several places that it is definitely confirmed that the T61 will have a 14inch standard aspect ratio screen model. It's just a question of when. Probably in the next couple of weeks or the first week of June.

3 year depot warranty is only about $120, I would say it's definitely worth it for the peace of mind it gives you.

PC Magazine did a review where they found the new Intel x3100 integrated graphics to be half as powerful as the ATI x1400 graphics card. This new x3100 is quite a step up from the old 950.

Yep. That's why I love them as well. Also, having a high resolution helps tremendously with screen real estate.

So will a good graphics option be available for the 14" SXGA setup? Or just the x3100? Im trying to figure out if the old x1400 will be better.

    Anyone?

The standard aspect ratio T61 will most likely have the same discreet graphics as the wide screen T61, the nVidia NVS 140M (128mb).

Rumors have it that the T61p will have the nVidia FX 570M (256mb).

Of course integrated graphics will always consume less power and will last you longer while on battery. But I don't know, you never know when you might want to play with some fancy graphics software or games. It's always nice to have the GPU option there when you need it.

Yep and yep. Widescreen have only about half as much height as SXGA+, and so users must scroll down twice as much.

Generally, novice and unsophistcated notebook buyers (the mass market) tend to make two common mistakes: they choose something too heavy/big, and they fail to realize that height usually matters more than width.
