Hey guys. I'm thinking of buying a 14 inch T61 for uni next year, but i have one question about two models offered on the Visaperks/Lenovo Canadian site.

    The first one is
ThinkPad T61 Series - A Lenovo Topseller Selection with 1GB Intel Turbo Memory!
    Part Number: 766416U
    Price: $1,499.00
    IntelĀ® Core 2 Duo T7300 - 2000MHz
    Genuine Windows Vista Business
    1024 MB RAM
    120 GB Harddrive
DVD Recordable (Dual Layer) 24X Max

Operating System: Genuine Windows Vista Business Screen: 14.1 WXGA+ TFT 1440x900 Onboard Graphic Chipset: nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M Onboard Audio: Intel High Definition Audio Included Modem: 56Kbps data/14.4Kbps fax Hard Drive Controller: Intel Turbo Memory 1GB Onboard Network Contoller: Gigabit Ethernet- Integrated 10Mbps,100Mbps,1000M Battery Type: 6 Cell Lithium-Ion PCMCIA Support: 1 Type I/II (ExpressCard or SmartCard or 4-in-1 MediaCard Reader) External Speakers: 2 (Internal Speakers) Warranty: Three years parts and labor (system battery: one year)

It is the first one and is $1499, and with 1GB+ RAM it is around 1640.

    The other one is
ThinkPad T61 Series - A Lenovo Topseller Selection with 1GB Intel Turbo Memory!
    Part Number: 766417U
    Price: $1,749.00
    IntelĀ® Core 2 Duo T7300 - 2000MHz
    Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate
    2048 MB RAM
    160 GB Harddrive
DVD Recordable (Dual Layer) 24X Max

Operating System: Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate Screen: 14.1 WXGA+ TFT 1440x900 Onboard Graphic Chipset: nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M Onboard Audio: Intel High Definition Audio Included Modem: 56Kbps data/14.4Kbps fax Hard Drive Controller: Intel Turbo Memory 1GB Onboard Network Contoller: Gigabit Ethernet- Integrated 10Mbps,100Mbps,1000M Battery Type: 6 Cell Lithium-Ion PCMCIA Support: 1 Type I/II (ExpressCard or SmartCard or 4-in-1 MediaCard Reader) External Speakers: 2 (Internal Speakers) Warranty: Three years parts and labor (system battery: one year)

Now that is around $100 more than the first one, with only differences im noticing is Vista Ultimate and 40GB more harddrive. Is there any other differences?? Cause I cannot find anything else, and I do not know if that justifies 100 bucks especially since im not that particular about OS (id rather prefer XP).

Also, can anyone tell me if Vista would run ok on 1GB of ram or is 2GB necessary.

Finally, how hard is it to install RAM on the T61. Im hearing things about removing the palmrest. Im not the most experienced guy with computers so is it that hard (i want to avoid paying 40 bucks for lenovo to install ram for me)?

    Your links don't work.

$100 more for Vista Ultimate and 40GB Hard Drive sounds pretty normal.

You should have at least 2GB of RAM for Vista to run smoothly. I would not suggest 1GB.

Installing RAM is relatively easy if you have eperience with desktop hardware. Even if you don't, all you have to do is unscrew two screws, put in the new RAM, and screw the two screws back in. You don't need to remove the palm rest to access the RAM bay.

First option is better bang for your buck.
You can add more ram later, if needed

I'm running Vista on 1GB. I do not recommend it. I don't even do heavy work right now and it lags terribly.
