When I use my recovery CD's to restore my computer to exactly how it came, does that erase everything, including my XP updates and programs. Does it make everything on my hard drive go away as if nothing was on it before?

that is exactly what happens. It will be like you first turned it on out of the box. Nothing you have saved/updated/etc will be there.
