Hello! As of right now, I am playing the waiting game for the T400, but will need it for school starting September 22nd. I will NEED it.

But since that is a long ways out, I have been waiting for the T400. BUT...I have been reading a lot of people saying even if they end up being released around Aug 5th, it may take a long time to actually receive them. Any estimates?

This is basically THE laptop I get for my college experience, so I don't want to just rush into a purchase. But at the same time, I need it by school start.

    Help?

If you're nervous about delivery issues, order the T61 which is a proven machine available now at good discounts and not that significant a difference in performance (Centrino2 platform does have performance and power improvements, but it may not be significant enough to justify delaying your purchase).

I also need a new one for school but can get on with an older one or the school labs for a month or so if need be. If delivery date is so urgent, you limit yourself somewhat but the T61 is a great machine from all I've heard.

I can only say from experience that I ordered a T42 the same week it was released (a long time ago now) and delivery took nearly 2 months. I'm hoping that's no longer the case, but I wouldn't bet the farm on any solid delivery date especially when the release date itself is still unofficial.

I was in the same dilema...ordered a t61 with cpp discounts for cheaper than an equivalently configured dell/hp. The new one wont have that many discounts and isnt much better other than using less power...slightly faster. I just got the 9cell battery and the T8300 which I should be fine with. List price on my 1475 dollar computer/warranty/dock was 2100...which the t400's will be around, maybe less, but certainly not that much of a difference

The only chance you have at receiving one before August 22nd is to order from a third party dealer who may or may not get pre-configured stock on August 5th.

September 22nd shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't see why you wouldn't get it by then unless they have issues

Ah, alright. Well that is good to know!

My only concern now is price. I really do not want to go over $1600 for this laptop with the 4 year accidental warranty coverage included. Will this be possible? Or should I go with the SL400?

$1600 is a good budget and it will be hard to go over that with the LED screen and discrete graphics. I am not sure if you get the 4 year accidental warranty, it will be under 1600$. I believe the next-day onsite warranty for the 4 years is about $300+.

It's hard to say but I guess you can always go for a 3 year if its over budget. Upgrading the ram yourself can also save you money but with the new DDR3 ram, its still pricy!

Bottom Line Telecommunications already have the new laptops available for ordering (I am not sure if they have them in stock, probably not, but you can order them for a decent price).

Yeah, it looks like the T400 is simply out of my price range. With the 4 year warranty (which is absolutely necessary), it will be a bit over. Looks like the SL400 for me!

Can you even order the SL400 right now? I've heard you can't even build one on the website

LED means light emitting diode and most new laptops are using these screens instead of the conventional LCD (liquid crystal display) because LED is lighter, thinner and brighter

The display will be LCD regardless of the backlight technology. Current/old backlights are generated by CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp). Requires higher voltages, greater display thickness, and consumes more power than the new displays using LEDs as the backlight source.

People need to stop being paranoid about release dates. You need to understand some things about the supply chain.

They don't start pouring the mould and cutting the wires on August 4th; they have fleets of basic configs ready to ship out on August 4th. They are building the machines and receiving parts as we speak.

If you have made up your mind you want the first batch of the new machines, then order on Aug.4th and it will be at your door 1-2 weeks later. 100% certain. But if you hesitate and order after the date, then you might get bottlenecked when the initial supply runs out.

They are not stupid, ok, they analyze the market, know it's in time for back to school, know how much to build for release date- all so that they don't' loose sales to Dell. Bottom line: Order on release date: you will have your machine in 2 weeks max.
