You can use GPS from you laptop by adding this $30 thing to your list when you're ordering it.

    Facts:
    1. No need to sign up service to have GPS.
    2. It uses your PCI Express Slot for the card.
    3. If you are already order it without the card, $169 please, they'll send you the card then YOU can install it under the keyboard.

    Card Model Number:
    AT&T G54506
    Verizon G54550

Anyone know how to get it cheap?

Looks like part # 43R9152 (AT&T card) is $135 on CPP.

Part of me wishes I'd ordered it with my T400, but the sensible side can't see a reason why I'd want to spend that kind of money to get GPS capability on my laptop. I have wifi at school and home so no interest in laptop connect type service, and I have GPS plus Google Maps on my blackberry.

hey, i recently had to return my t400 because of a problem so now i am reordering a new t400 with wimax and maybe at&t 3g, i am just not sure why i would order that if i dont have a at&t service and they dont have as much coverage as verison. so plz explain how i can use gps if there is no coverage? also, what is uwb? i am wondering which will be more helpful, a uwb or a turbo memory( plz dont say that TB is useless, i tested it and it works, if u have 1.7 driver with dashboard, i dont no if its battery saving, but there is a difference. my word 2007 loaded the moment i clicked on the icon)

    @t3a
gps will work without an activated simcard in the slot.

UWB is Ultra Wide Band. It operates at a very high frequency hence offers high speed data rates. Think of it as bluetooth but much faster.
It will be used to communicate between UWB enabled devices. Using UWB you can play songs, DVDs on your home theater audio system without any USB cables. But for all this to work all your devices need to be UWB enabled, not just the laptop.

and yes I agree that turbo memory does work. I have 7200 rpm drive and see a noticeable difference when turbo memory is enabled.
Other option is you can get UWB and you can get inbuilt card reader and use Sandisk Extreme II card as turbo memory. But then you won't have PC card slot.

No contract. This is a no-brainer to get the AT&T card. GPS works without SIM. If you want 3G the weasel way, you can do MediaNet prepaid and get unlimited data, $20 a month, no contract. (You can search the forums here for more info.)

It's either/or with the Turbo memory or Bluetooth. I think the benefits of Bluetooth (mice, pda sync, A2DP) outweigh the performance boost of Turbo Memory.

Lenovo needs to put a tip on order page about this "hidden" gps functionality.

    @mikec
you can configure it with bluetooth and turbo memory together. Its between turbo memory and UWB (Ultra Wide Band) which is new technology.

hey thanks for the reply, yea i guess i will just just stick to turbo memory for now considering that there isnt many uwb devices and that it is not even offered with t400 anymore. so i am just going to keep my config to
    intel core 2 duo t9600
14.1 inch led screen with camera
    finger reader
    2gb of turbo memory
4 gb of memory( didnt really feeling like adding it myself)
    320 gb of hdd
intel wimax/wifi link 5350 (dont know how will that will do)
and try to add at&t 3G band.
    price: 1940 + 30 dollars of 3G band maybe.

Where is the option for the UWB? I see the note by the Turbo Memory, "Selection of Intel Turbo Memory hard drive cache does not allow a configuration with Integrated UWB WPAN," but I do not see the option for the UWB.

I don't think so...when I did mine, it would not let me do Bluetooth if I did Turbo memory. I know, it's supposedly only with the UWB option (which is not longer there), but it would not let me do it.

Regardless, Turbo Memory is a waste of money at this point:

You are WAY overpaying for that laptop. You can shave 600 bucks off that config for a T400. You have something similar for about $1290, and something better for about $1350.

My suggestions: go with a T9400 CPU - you won't notice the difference. Ditch the Turbo Memory. Get an 80GB HD, and replace with your own 320GB, 7200rpm drive (instead of 5400 rpm). That runs about $100; sell the other 80GB on eBay for $20 and it's faster and cheaper than the Lenovo 320GB option. I would skip the wimax card, but it's a coin toss if you want to spend the money; the 5300 is fine. Definitely get the AT&T 3G card. This config is ~$1290 (include 4GB RAM, fingerprint reader, best screen w/webcam)

Maybe so...or maybe rumour...we will see in Nov.

In the meantime, I'm reupping 3 months of MediaNet on Nov 11 just to be safe.

1MB and 5MB offerings on GoPhones are a joke. You hit that limit easily in one session to a "heavy" web site.

I think they have to keep unlimited option (just charge more), or they will lose customers.

If they are, it's a shame, as it's the highest demand service out there.

Hopefully as T-Mobiles rollls out more 3G, they will have it.
