Besides for gaming, when do you switch from integrated to discrete graphics and vice versa?

Video editing; watching HD videos, 3d modeling, and when I use vista (

I never switch. When this system automatically switches between the two, depending on whether Im on battery or not, is when this feature actually becomes useful.

Maybe a lame question, but how do I set it up to automatically switch between the two depending on battery or not?

You can't. Switchable graphics is a manual process. However, I would use the integrated most of the time (even when plugged in because it reduces power draw, heat, and noise). The x4500 MHD is powerful enough for video playback, Vista, and most other tasks.
You want the discrete for gaming, and the small handful of applications (Maya, CS4, Solidworks, etc.) that are GPU accelerated (however, for many of these you need a FireGL or QuadroFX).
When do you switch graphics?
