When do you think the x200(s) series will be replaced by newer models?

Late 2009 to early 2010, Lenovo will likely release the X201, with the newest Intel platform.

Replaced as in a new design...? or just regular hardware refreshes from intel? The series is only about 8months old...

Like when will they fall out of fashion and the prices (esp. x200s) go down?

Fall out of fashion...? well if you want to compare it to the pricing of the x61 series and look at the difference in cost from now and its original release you could draw some conclusions that it usually takes are least more than a year for it to drop. But the x200 is already a lot more affordable than its launch. The x200s is more of a premium but even still there are some good outlet deals. What sort of pricing are you looking for because the x200 seems pretty fair to me for what it is now.

I'm not in terrible need of x200s, but on the other hand it would nice to have one :), not sure if to wait till it drops to $1000-1200. May take 2 years?

Well, the x61s came out in July 2007. It didn't become really affordable (<$800) until about January 2009.

The x200s and x200 Tablet didn't start shipping into late October 2008. Therefore, if the same timing rules apply, the x200s and x200 Tablet should reach the <$1000 price point around March 2010.

As to the original question - outdated is kind of a hard item to quantify. The CPU/GPU speed will certainly become outdated in short order. However, the things that really matter (keyboard quality, screen resolution, battery life, weight, etc.) will likely remain among the best for a few years to come.

The fact that the important things remained superb, even when the 1.5 GHz Pentium M fell way behind premier performance, is what enabled me to keep my ThinkPad T40 for 5 years (until the x200 series bested it in almost every category [performance, weight, battery life, size, etc.] while maintaining keyboard and overall quality).

The X61 hit just over $800 in November/December of '07 then was never cheaper until they started clearancing them.
