I've been waiting since June for the T400 to come out, and in the process have passed on buying a T61 or X61 with CPP code. The question is, when is the official release date for the T400? Last time I checked on Engadget (a few weeks ago), it was July 15th, but now I'm seeing August 5th since Montevina is delayed until then.

I can't really wait anymore after August 5th, since it'll take at least a week or two to build and I need to wipe the HDD when I get it and do a fresh install of XP before leaving for college.

What makes you think Macbook Pro is ever cheaper than Thinkpad???
Beside, the build quality is a big difference of the two, MBP is only a "kid".

I dunno about you, but after using a friend's MBP for over a month to try it out I concluded that the build quality was pretty damned good...at least as good as any Thinkpad I've used (and I've tried out both IBM and Lenovo made ones in the past few years)...and as far as pricing goes it seems that the new T400 could approach MBP territory when equipped with a few desirable options like discrete graphics...

Not that it really matters though...if Lenovo can't get something out by early August I'll have to buy a notebook from another company, since I don't really want to buy a current T series with its subpar battery life and the need to buy a 9 cell off Amazon/eBay.

Well, I have a friend who's MBP died twice on him, he gave up on Apple fixing it, since the customer service was so horrible- so he said. In terms of build quality- Just because it's casing is metal-aluminum doesn't mean it's better casing than a composite plastic.
I have seen enough Apple products to know: 50% looks, 40% brand, and 10% build quality. But my ipod 30gb has been strong for past 2 years, so i guess that 10% is holding on...

I have said this before the new T series is meant to replace old T series, so they must maintain the current market and customers. They are not going to jack up the price to loose them.

I predict the pricing will be current sale price of respective model+15%.

Sure MBP is build damn good, since that aluminum is not some cheap plastic, but as good as a thinkpad??? Sorry, that piece of metal runs hot and can be bend, you know that Thinkpad has the magnesium alloy roll-cage on the lid and chassis right?

Who said the battery life of thinkpad is subpar???? I guess you're the only one "lucky" to have had the experienced.

Oh that sucks...guess I won't be getting a ThinkPad after all then since I won't be able to get it before I leave for college.

I'd get the T61, but I can get an XPS M1330 with T8300, LED screen, and 8400M GS for about the same price after all coupons are applied, so I'm probably going to get the Dell. ThinkPad may have the edge on build quality, but the main reason I even waited this long for the T400 was the option for an LED screen.

People keep saying that the ThinkPad's have an edge on build quality, but their quality has dropped noticeably since Lenovo took over from IBM. My friend has a T21, T41, and T61 and the build quality is good for the T21 and T41 but the T61 feels a lot cheaper. :(

My T61 14.1 inch seems more durable than my NC8430 and that notebook is durable.

That's a 100% wrong, you may feel it that way but not everyone feels the same as you do. The new thinkpad may use a different type of plastic outer shield, but the inner magnesium alloy roll-cage makes it even stronger, not weaker.

Many T61 owners disagree (forum.thinkpads.com). The addition of a magnesium roll cage for the screen as well as the base has arguably enhanced it's durability. The T41 is a very solid machine but it has it's flaws (easily cracks in places).

I too am waiting on the T400/T500s as they've got LED backlit screens. The T61 doesn't have very good battery life in comparison to my current T41p.

Ok, so I actually ended up reconsidering and getting a T61 with T8300, 1GB RAM (going to get another 2GB stick from newegg), 160GB 7200 RPM HDD, NVS140M, WXGA+ screen, AGN Wireless, Bluetooth, and 9 cell battery for $1181...supposed to ship on the 28th...hopefully it's on time.

Where have you heard that prices are going to be up? Don't believe everything you read on the interwebs. Prices could be higher if they have a SSD, but a standard hdd should still be an option. Other than that I would bet that prices stay within reason. Every time a new lineup is due people speculate on high prices, but when they make it to market price increase is marginal at first and drops the same as it always has.

I personally have owned a T22, R41, and now a T61p. The build has certainly changed and I can understand what you are saying by it feels cheaper, but what you are feeling is deceiving. The new thinkpads actually have better engineering. The rollcage provides superior protection and durability. The outer covering is not as thick or stiff as older thinkpads because it does not need to be (due to the rollcage). Many people have complained about the feel of the new outer material, however they overlook the fact that with the new setup thinkpads are lighter while also being stronger plus the new material covering the back of the lcd screen allows for better wireless reception. I have owned my T61p for almost a year now and it has help up like a champ.

The X200 is supposed to be released on Aug 5. I'm not sure if they are going to release all the new models at once or stagger them but it would be cool to see all of the models released at the same time so people can see which they like.
