I just ordered the Lenovo Y550P (i7, GT 240M, 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM) and can't help but notice that there is no owner thread or much discussion about the Y550P here.

    How come?

For around $1000 USD this seems like an amazing gaming machine that should be $1400. How many people own this machine and can let me know what to expect?

I have one. There are just a handful of threads around here regarding the Y550p, currently there don't seem to be enough owners on the forum to keep a thread alive for too long.

I hope you enjoy yours, I've had no problems with mine so far but I've only had it for about 3 weeks. You're right about the price, it has a ton of power for $999. The concession being somewhat marginal build quality in a few areas. I personally wish the lid was sturdier, but I don't spend a lot of time poking the top of my computer with my finger.

I figure with those specs at that price there will be a build compromise. So which games do you play and what are your performances like?

Probably because this tends to be a ThinkPad-oriented board. If you don't find enough Y500p owners here to spark a discussion, try looking for them at http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-and-U-series-Laptops/bd-p/ideaPad

JaneL the problem with that forum is it is full of people complaining about issues and looking for a resolution. I want a forum to talk about the "awesomeness" of the Y550P and the things people are doing with theirs.

But thanks for the link. I know where to go if I get any issues.

I'm seriously thinking about buying this computer and would love to hear some thoughts from current owners. Haven't seen much on this site thus far. Links to reviews would also be welcome.

That's not a problem and it's why I read this forum. I don't want to read a forum for you to talk about "awesomeness". I've got better things to do.

I think you are misinterpreting my post.

But I would still rather not deal with the lenovo forum where all the post are "x is not working" or "lenovo is crap" when what I want to read is the things people are doing with their Y550P in terms of hardware upgrades and tweaks to improve it.

I've played a few games on it so far. Using the recommended settings button on Crysis, it sets everything to high minus anti-aliasing. Borderlands and Left 4 Dead 2 run on high as well and look awesome. Torchlight runs fast with everything on high. The speakers are amazing (well compared to my Fujitsu tablet pc) and the battery gets about 4 hours with wifi turned off and screen brightness low. The processor is FAST. I did run into a bit of a heat problem after 4 hours of gaming with GPU-z saying my GPU was at 90c, but probably because I was playing on my lap in a warm room. In my basement it doesnt go above 80c. I'm going to try out MS Flight Simulator next which should be no problem since it's about 3 years old. I ran 3dmark06 and got about 7100 points with other programs running so I'll try again later and see if I can get a better score.

I think you are the epitome of negativity on this forum and I'm not sure why you bother to post when nothing you say is positive and you rarely refer to anything other than your past as a 'programmer' and how you used to be very important in a 'large organisation' until your accident..

Been wanting to get this off my chest for a while now.

Thanks for the information. I am only going to be playing Street Fighter 4 and WoW for now but I am limited by my 4 year old Acer right now in what games I can play. Will also use it for Photoshop.

There's always a new model. I know what you mean being limited; my tablet pc had an Intel GMA 945 and i could hardly play Warcraft 3. Now it seems I can play everything.

The only info I have on it is an i5 cpu, 4gb ddr3, 500GB HDD, and a rumoured NV GT260. There is a Y460 with an i3 or i5 option.

I know, but I would rather own the machine for months before the refresh as opposed to weeks.

I had bad luck and bought a Y550 only to discover before even receiving that they switched over to the GT 240m (so I got one with a GT 130m). But I more than satisfied with performance on Street Fighter 4, L4D2 and in Photoshop. Granted I did swap out the drive immediately to a SSD so some extra boost with that added.

When I was in the market for a new laptop I was considering the Y450 which had a 105M which turned out to be a 110M. Then I saw the Asus U80V and was trying to get one. All in all I am happy with the choice of a Y550P. I am hoping the Y560 does not get a backlit keyboard or I will cry.

Can anybody post core temps / real temps for the Y550P CPU and GPU?
TY, greatly appreciated. 90C is quite hot, the GPU should not be as hot (in other laptops it's 70-80) even for GT240M.

    TY ^^
