Well as far as I am aware that luxury is only for the US market ... UK is expensive so is rest of Europe. In USA you can still get twice the laptop for the same money.

UK pays VAT.   we pay sales tax, property tax, and income tax.

in the end there isn't much difference in price.

There are no Lenovo coupons for the UK and yes prices are higher. On the bright side, you get free health care.

    In the UK we pay:

-Value-added tax (17.5% on every single good)
    -Customs tax (on imports)
    -Council tax (annually)
-Income tax (20% on earnings over 7k GBP, 40% over 40k GBP, 50% over 150k GBP)
-National insurance (9%? extra on top of income)
-Road tax (100-400 GBP per year)
-Inheritance tax (40% on every pound over 350k? GBP)
-Stamp duty (to do with buying a house, 2.5%?)
-Capital-gains tax (on savings, not sure of %)

    Welcome to socialism!

Back to the laptops, not only does the x201 start at ~850 GBP, we have no coupons and the US Lenovo x201 will probably start at 500 GBP and you all get 20% off!!

    It doesnt even out

we pay insurance, inheritance tax, capital-gains tax, customs, road tax (on toll roads), and tax on home purchases as well.   i'm still not seeing much difference here. ;)

you could always a) move to the US or b) find some way to buy a system from the US.   like andrew said, there are no coupons in the UK market.

It never does ... in Holland it's about 30% more expensive than UK again ... I had a friend who actually flew to NY bought the laptop he wanted, stayed a few days to see the place, flew back and still was cheaper off ... imagine that. This was a few years back. Why don't you try and locate a Topseller model reseller in the USA who ships internationally. I believe when you look on Ebay you may find one or two. Of course no international warranty available but even paying VAT you will be much cheaper off. Especially if you can buy a X200 for U$600 or so ...

Ah sorry, didnt realise you pay all that.

Least you don't have a Government who makes your country go from something respectable, to something pathetic!

if a german keyboard isn't a big problem for u. u are still better of going for an academic reseller in germany. price isn't as good as US, but still far cheaper than UK price. thinking about it, there should be also an academic shop for UK :) as far as i know, most thinkpads have international warranty, just look it up.
