Do you buy from a dealer?
    Why?

I bought mine from Lenovo direct because I was able to use an EPP code for purchase.

I bought mine directly from Lenovo because of the ability to configure my machine. I wanted the SXGA+ screen, but all the pre-configured models that had it were much more expensive due to having better specs like faster hard drives, CPUs, more memory, dedicated GPUs. I mainly just wanted the higher resolution, but lower specs on everything else since I am not a power user. The memory, hard drive, software, etc. don't mean much to me as it's cheaper to upgrade them myself.

    Lenovo Direct!
    because I could....
    1) apply an EPP code,
    2) use 25% off Lenovo Anniversary Sale discount,
    3) customize my laptop with the hardware I wanted.
    4) take advantage of the free shipping!

I bought mine from a dealer (Tiger Direct) because the model I wanted (Y510) was only sold through Lenovo's dealer channel, and Tiger in particular had them available first at a great price. (I'm eliglble for the Employee Purchase Plan, but the features and pricing on these models when discounted at the dealers beat the EPP prices on the Thinkpads or 3000 series notebooks I was considering)

I got mine from Thinkpadusa on Ebay. They seemed like a very reputable dealer. Smooth transaction. Full Lenovo 3 year warranty, which I need to upgrade to onsite. Laptop was new. I LOVE IT! Dave

I bought mine directly from Lenovo. Where else could you buy a T61p for 900 bucks after tax besides from them? :p

    Direct from the Lenovo site.

Coupons and discounts helped with price over pre-configured machines online.

Being able to maximize the things I can't change, and minimize the things I'll replace.

Just a late note. I bought mine from Lenovo directly. With the T61p's the cheaper option is to buy direct, but I've found on some of the standard T61 Top Seller models featured at Newegg, it was actually cheaper to buy through Newegg than the same configuration from Lenovo direct.

Lenovo direct. I just try to avoid going through the middleman as much as possible for expensive purchases. Plus EPP, free shipping and coupons are the icing on the cake. :)

I'm confused by the people that don't buy through Lenovo Direct. Once you apply whatever coupons they have available, the cost is generally lower than what you'd wind up paying on Ebay or craigslist.com.

I suppose that is why Eddie is asking us this question. Perhaps Lenovo's direct sales practices are making it difficult for retailers.

Lenovo direct does not always have the best pricing infact they generally do not for topsellers.
I am asking this question because we do sell lenovo and because i was just wondering what the forum demographic preffers. It is apparant that forum members are inherently drawn to coupons because they know where to find them however the assumption that lenovo is cheaper then dealers is only partially correct. if that were the case there would be no channel for these products at all. granted you can find great deals from lenovo direct from time to time but not for every product. lenovo is not making it easy for the channel but at the same time they do offer vast discounts into the channel. Another very important fact is that ordering from a dealer is leaps and bounds faster then from lenovo direct. Not everyone can wait a week or more for order process. Thank you all for voting. This thread answers all my questions. If anyone eklse wants to add something here please do.

The reasons why dealers are able to still do ok is yes, because they do ship faster than lenovo direct.

However, dealers also generally offer less customization than Lenovo.

The biggest factor however, is that not everyone is aware of the coupon codes or discounts available.

The subset of customers that enjoy browsing forums and constantly check deals sites like fatwallet and slickdeals is in reality very small.

I honestly don't even know where these coupon codes come from. Sometimes I do see the Lenovo coupon codes on their site but other times not. Dell coupon codes are definitely not available to everyone.

So unless you check deal sites you're not going to know about these discounts. A majority of customers will be just comparing full Lenovo price vs. dealer price so they may make the choice to purchase from a dealer instead.

Since I do check on the prices almost on a daily basis, I can judge if a current deal is worth considering. I'm not in a hurry when I purchase laptops and waiting is not a problem for me.

I'm sure you see much better sales from Asus laptops compared to Lenovo because Asus does not do direct sales.

we do however asus poses a very different problem one which prevents them from growing as a competitor to lenovo and it has to do with management. We are new with lenovo but i can tell you that their channel support is a wonder compared to asus channel support (their only bread and butter as they dont sell direct),
Asus does not sell direct for now but in their best interest one day they will.
