I remember when I ordered my W530 I had all kinds of customization options from the CPU to Memory to GPU, now I look at the W550 order form and see two models available and almost zero hardware customization options.

Is this a new terrible stand by Lenovo?

Can I still get a custom built workstation if I call Sales directly?'

if this is the way Lenovo are going I may need to look at Dell for my workstations in future. Horrible change to the process.

    Thanking you in advance.

Actually, I justed wanted to post the same, but for another model. I wanted to customize a Lenovo Ideapad Y50, but I can't. For example, I don't need a 1000 GB harddrive, or Windows 8.1. This would spare me 70-150 bucks.

I hate the presumption of configurations, which only serve the accumulation and disposal of electronic trash. Isn't possible to simply buy a Lenovo Barebone?

I think the answer is "it depends". In the UK, I was able to customise a Thinkpad Yoga and an X250 (which were the two I was interested in), but not able to customise a T450. Other than the gaming Ideapad (is that the Y-series?), I had no customisation options for the Ideapad range.

However, a week later, I could happily customise the T450, but not the Y-series.

I've just tried out the W550 you mentioned, and I can pick the processor, the Windows edition, the RAM, a 3K screen over 1080p, a variety of HDDs and SSDs, whether or not I want a fingerprint scanner and 720p camera, the Wifi card, and the WAN (mobile broadband) card.
