Ordered my T61p without the DVD writer to avoid delay, now having serious second thoughts. Anyone know a good place to buy a DVD writer for the laptop? Is only the orderable part compatible, or any slimbay will do?

If it ends up being way expensive I may have to settle for an external drive...

eBay would probably be a good place to start.

Yeah I looked, nothing there. Specifically the 42V8172 drive.

In general, I would search for UJ-852, seeing as that's the "name" Panasonic has given the drive. Make sure it has the correct bezel and all.

Just search eBay for the 9.7mm DVD burner, and quite a few Lenovo ones will pop up.
Or search for T60 DVD burner and several compatible units will pop up.
They start at like $80 though.

I suggest search for UJ-852 on ebay. IBM's drive are basically Panasonic UJ-852. I ordered my T60 without the dvd burner and also regarded it. I was able to find an original IBM dvd burner (38T2850/38T2851) for ~$60 shipped.
