I want a laptop that runs quiet and cool. Should have decent battery life. The most intensive thing I put my computer through is probably photo editing and converting raw to jpeg. Is there a jump in build quality between the models? Tell which you think is the best for me and why?

    also I forgot t410s

definitely there is a jump in build quality between sl series and R or T series. R series is just a thicker and heavier version of T series. IMO, the build quality are the same. Since the price between R400 and T410 series right now is less than 100 dollars, but T410 is much more computational powerful. I would recommend the T410.

The T series has superior build quality, and battery life is pretty solid at 7 hours with the 9 cell battery.

T410S is a good choice if you value portability, the 1+ pound weight difference is pretty significant

if budget is not a problem, definitely t410s is the best choice! order intel 80g ssd as the main booting disk, and ultra-bay HDD for storage.

the extra money will pay off in the coming 3 or 5 years.

T400s is just as good, you probably can find a good used example. The CPU used in it should be more than enough for what you need to use it for.

how should i go about finding a used laptop? Should I be worried about battery life? Don't bateries degrade over time? Is t400s good enough for windows 7? An which config would you suggest?

Depending on your definition of "decent" battery life, the T400s/T410s may not be the best option for you, since they can only use non-extended relatively low-charge-capacity batteries. The T410 would probably be the better choice - the integrated graphics model should easily get 7+ hours on the 9-cell battery.

First place I would look would be outlet.lenovo.com
The T400s is more than good enough for windows 7
I am guessing for photo editing you should be fine with integrated graphics though if you dabble in graphics work something with a GPU might be a better bet.
Regarding the battery I am not sure what to tell you since I've never bought a laptop from the outlet. Maybe someone who has bought a used system from the outlet might be able to give you some insight.

If you could live with a battery life of 3 hours and something, definitely get the t400s/410s which is lighter and has better built quality IMHO.
