I recently ordered the Y500 with 1TB of storage and a 750M graphics card. It's supposed to to be here early next week. I currently have a Samsung 840 pro SSD sitting around from my old (deceased) laptop and want to use that as the primary drive for the Y500, and use the 1TB drive in the ultrabay slot.

Anyways, which HDD caddy should I get? And is it a 9.5mm opening? Because I have a 12.7mm caddy from my old laptop, and thought I could use that.

This seems to be the best option for 9.5mm : Amazon.com: Universal 9.5mm SATA Hard Drive Caddy for hP lenovo: Computers & Accessories

But it's rated kinda low, so I am reluctant to get it.

None of the aftermarket SATA HDD caddies will work with the Y500. You will have to purchase Lenovo's caddy, which isn't cheap.

Other people have reported ones from eBay working just fine.

I've looked a some on eBay and I am not sure what to get. I mean, they are cheap, but I don't want to guy 10 different ones, and return 9 that aren't compatible

Hmmm, I can't quite recall, but in one of the threads on this forum someone mentioned which to get. Sorry I can't be more specific, but it's here. Maybe someone will notice this thread.

Here's my update on the ebay HDD caddy I bought for $12. IT WORKS!

It's not PERFECT but it fits, it works, and I saved $150+.

    Comparison with the dvd drive

Putting the stock bracket on the caddy
I took out the L shaped black bracket from the DVD drive and put it on the HDD caddy, it's attached by 4 screws.
    2 in front

    2 on the side

    Put my 2.5" HD in

    Slide it in

Not a perfect fit, but I think you can remove the front plate from the stock DVD drive and put it on this caddy... I didn't want to tear mine apart cuz I still need to ship it back to Lenovo :p

I was under the impression that the Y500 ultrabay only interfaced with PCI-like caddies. Good to see a SATA connection nearby that allows mounting of aftermarket caddies using the stock brackets. BTW, it is generally pretty easy to remove the faceplate. On my Y580, I used a small flathead screwdriver to unhook one side and then swung out the rest.

Pity though that this setup negates the Y500's SLi feature.

If you already have the dvd module then this solution works brilliantly. If you only had the second GPU in there then buying an aftermarket caddy wouldn't help you at all from what I've seen.

Don't be stupid just buy a 1TB-2TB 2.5 inch hard drive and use the mSATA slot for a SSD if you want SSD. That's the best solution really. Just save the HDD caddy for blu ray, DVD or maybe SLI or whatever you use your laptop for ;)

For 150 euros or USD you can have a 2TB HDD and only 1TB is 60 euros in belgium. I am just saying, spending money on that stupid caddy is just wasted space.

I opened the bottom of my Y500 and could replace the HDD easily. Careful not to break anything while replacing it though. It can be tricky. It's only removing one cover.
