    My requirement is as follows:

I need XP on this machine for about 1 year and after that I can install Win 7 and remove XP completely. no dual boot, no XP compatibility mode.

What are my options? It seems that Lenovo i5 machines can allow me to do this. What about XP drivers etc?

Can you use XP in a virtual machine? That's what Microsoft calls XP mode, you can have it pre installed, and it will run any old XP programs you need to run. You will run into driver problems if you install XP directly on one of the new machines.

Ivy bridge (the new laptop chipsets) is supposed to be a "tick" release (meaning minor), so it is possible you may find driver support. At the moment, Lenovo's website is not showing XP drivers for the new laptops, though, so it might be risky to assume you will get XP support other than in XP Mode.

Since you already missed the launch sales, you ought to consider waiting until they begin shipping. Someone on these forums will likely try it.

Or, order an older laptop before they clearance out. The t420 series supports XP.

No I'm afraid VM is not an option. Machine, as I am being told, will need to have 32-bit XP for about a year and then will need to have Win-7 after that and I need to look into that.

Yeah the latest line of ThinkPad's can support Windows XP as Lenovo still issue compatible drivers for them. I ran Windows XP natively on my T420 before with no problems, you can have a look at the first section of my PDF guide which shows you how to install XP on the T420.

What is the best way to figure out if a particular Thinkpad can support XP. should i look at the drivers download page on Lenovo site and see if XP drivers are available for a particular model or is there another way?

That's what I would do...also, they've updated the drivers page...x230 has 32-bit XP support so I would guess the rest will have it to

Lenovo is always good about drivers, they should still have XP drivers for the forseeable future as many coporations still run XP on their machines. That being said, you might want to fill out What Notebook Should I Buy and post there as you already have a thread in the Latitude forum.
