    Should recieve new T400 in a couple of days but am wondering which programs you removed from the machine after making recovery DVDs. Also, if there is a recovery partition, did you remove that also and thanks. I doubt if I will do a clean install since no Office software should be preinstalled. Thanks for your input. Mine will have Vista Business 32 bit.

    I had a lot of trouble with dropping networks with my T500(nearly the same ase you comp.) a solution to this is to remove the access center or what ever it's called.

    I generally remove the message center, access connections, all security software EXCEPT the fingerprint one, and a few other things. Big ones I always want to make sure I have are the power manager, rescue and recovery, system update, and the hotkey programs so my functions keys work.

    @Kevin,

    So, from what you are saying, if it does come with recovery partition, you keep it there also and thanks.

    I personally do not remove the recovery partition, I find it's handy to have and ended up using it on every ThinkPad I've owned, especially if it's an ultraportable with no optical. Mostly when I go to sell it. I don't use a ton of disk space either though, so it's never bothered me that some space is lost to the recovery partition and files.

    Yes/no. I normally dont use the recovery partition on the machine. I nuke the original install and start fresh. Rescue and Recover is then used for making images to a USB or network drive for easy recovery.

    I was a technical user on a t61p. Actually I'd recommend eliminating the partitions. I never used them.

    I havent used a thinkpad since briefly owning a t42 back in the day, but with all other laptops the first thing i've always done was do a repartition and complete clean install to get rid of all the junk they install at the factory. Always made the computer perform 3x better.

    I only use power manager, ultranav, and hard drive protection. I don't keep the partition, but have the recovery discs.
