This thread is being started in the Lenovo/IBM section because IMO the problem is related to my new T61p PC. I love my new T61p EXCEPT for this issue described below.

Up until I got my T61p a couple of weeks ago, I have had almost zero disconnects with either of my two routers over the last number of years. Very dependable....and I could just set the router for the desired level of security and forget about it.

But, with the T61p and its IPW4965, I now get disconnects every day.

I don't really care about speed or capacity. I want dependability (no disconnects) with some level of WPA security.

In my household, there are two other laptops that have no disconnects with either of two different routers and the same level of encryption.

Disconnects also occur under WEP for my T61p.

    For the forum:

    (1) Do others see the same disconnect problems with the T61p? Or with the IPW4965?

    and

    (2) What is the most dependable WPA capable router available today? Is it dependable with the T61p/4965?

    Thanks for any inputs.

    What router are you using?
I use WPA2-PSK on mine and have very good connectivity. Did have some rare few second disconnects but it happened on other PCs too , attributed that to my ISP.

    morphy,

Thanks for your response. Are you able to mention your router model as well?

Mine are Airlink RTW026 and Airlink AR525W.

Zero disconnects is an objective.....once in awhile ...ok.

    Right now.....this is a problem....1-2 per day.

I'm using the DLink WBR DIR-625 (N Draft) router. There's also the DIR-655 extreme which is identical except for gigabit support. Connect speed is 144Mbps, probably go higher if I didn't use WPA2 but 144 is plenty lots for me.

Thanks, morphy. Do you also use AES?

I actually have the DIR-655 on order but was concerned I had a 4965 problem.....still not sure if that is the case or not. But with two other laptops connecting ok....I wanted to get some feedback.

Thanks again for your specific input.

I have had good luck with Buffalotech Mimo Speed routers, They are not true Mimo but use an amplifier to help performance and boost signal. This coupled with DDWRT with the amplifier turned up through the DDWRT Firmware seem rock solid. I threw out over $200 worth of netgear garbage for these $35-$40 routers and have never looked back. I have not had a single real disconnect since I purchased them, even running encryption...I did get disconnected once when the modem locked up and a few times due to power outages.

I have not tried with my Lenovo yet but my Landlord is on a mac and her kids have laptops as well and my PC never disconnects or any other laptops I have had with it around (Other than my old IBM with a netgear USB adapter damn netgear!) I have had problems with every single piece of netgear home equipment ever purchased, only their old blue routers seem reliable.

I agree with Justintoxicated. I've read lots of good things about Buffalo routers re-flashed with the DDWRT firmware. The positives are that you can get them for really cheap and they perform as well as Linksys (argued the best). I'm using two of them myself.

    Good luck.

    WPA with AES also works.

Well they work better than most linksys I have sceen (I won't say all cause that woudl be too bold), have not sceen them commpared to a wireless N Linksys for example, but since I only use my router for internet, the bottleneck is my cable connection not the wireles router. For everything else I am hard wired. I have one setup to work as a bridge (compliments of DDWRT,a bridge would have cost well over $100 and the router can be used as either bridge or Router with the DDWRT firmware).

My buddies linksys woudl still freeze up from time to time, but he had the lite version of DDWRT not the full version. This is the particular routers I am using althoguh the description is pretty meh once you flash to DDWRT.

That D-link is also supposed to be pretty solid, I think it is capable of handeling even more connections than the buffalotech + DDWRT, Great if you have high traffic (exp Bit Torrents "BT")

Thanks for your inputs. Clicked on your Buffalo link and I see they are under injunction....and not allowed to sell their routers!

Continuing my search for the perfect router to support the 4965......
