If by general you mean word processing, internet, etc., then either system will work. In fact, they are both more than powerful enough for "everyday" uses. If price is a big issue, you could get something less powerful and still be able to do general stuff.

Can you be more specific as to what you will be using it for.

    Also, what is your budget?

Are you set on getting an IBM?

How many years will you be using this laptop (before you upgrade to something else)?

Anything else you can tell us...

    P.S. Welcome to the NotebookReview.com Forums [ :)].

    Thanks for the warm welcome!

I want to spend between 1500 and $2000. I'd like this laptop to last me a while (at least 3 yrs for school) I need it to be kind of tough, as I am fairly clumsy. I am not married to IBMs but they come highly recommended. I basically want a computer that is fast...that I can use the internet (lots of law school research)while I have word open and music playing. My current desktop (purchased in 1997) basically can only do 1/2 a thing at a time and I just want a good fast computer. Any help you all can give would be great! Thanks so much

You should also browse around the IBM forum on this site as I remember there are a few topics about the computers you are considering.

The difference in processors will not be that major.
As long as you have at least 512mb ram you will be good.
Is a 40gig harddrive going to be enough for you. After IBM installs Windows XP and some programs you will be left will ~33gigs (I think). If that is enough, then its fine.
