Anyone know *for sure* which current Thinkpads have the touch screen option? How good (or relatively unbad, since we're talking Lenovo screens) are they? Worth the extra money? I love my iphone, i know it's nothing at all like a thinkpad touch screen, but having the ability to do a little touch navigating seems like a nice option.
thanks!

I wouldn't put too much into it. The trackpoint+keyboard combo is probably one of the fastest and smoothest ways to interact with a computer possible. Anything that's not already in reach of your fingertips can be binded to combinations with a scripting program(auto hotkey). I.e., I binded shift+middle click to close a tab, context menu key + right/left click browses through tabs.
In terms of convenience, is it really more practical to repeatedly swipe your fingers across a 14"+ screen to scroll or to hold down a soft button and slightly tilt a track point. It's really only useful for hand held slates/tablets -
Your iPhone does not have a hinge in the middle of it either! While holding the iPhone in one hand or laying it flat on a table, the touch interface is intuitive. If you want that kind of experience, you pretty much have to go with a tablet solution.
The X200/X201 tablets are supposed to have superior screens. You can choose between normal brightness, super-high brightness for outdoor viewing, or touch interface. The touch interface consumes a fair amount of power, reducing the "rated" battery lifetime by something like 2-1/2 hours. Of course, that's rated life. When playing with the HP tablet in Fry's, I found the touch interface easier for navigating pages while in tablet mode. I hated touch for data input.
I guess I've been so trained by pens running out of ink while writing on a non-horizontal position, that it just seems strange for me to touch something 90 degrees off from a keyboard. Have I become as hidebound as my father, who primarily uses a PC to play Minesweeper? -
I also played around with the idea of getting (before I got my X301) a T400s with the touchscreen. Then the more I thought about it, the more I was thinking to myself "how much would I actually USE the touchscreen??"
Turns out I'm VERY glad I did NOT get a touchscreen. It would seem awkward for me to touch the screen of a laptop (unless it's a tablet that is)
So, all in all, not for me -
I guess it all just comes down to practice, practice, practice.

However, when on the road I always use the trackpoint, and leave the mouse at home (or use it in the hotel).
It's funny because before I bought my first Thinkpad, I used to LOVE touchpads, and I used to hate trackpoints. Now, it's the other way around lol
In fact, I disabled the trackpad on both my T61, and X301. -

On touchscreens, I don't find anything I do today with my computer that will require me to use/ opt for a touchscreen. But who knows how my usage will change. Maybe I have an irrational resistance towards touchscreens which extends even to my mobile phones. -
I have the x201 tablet. I don't use the touch screen for general mousing, but for working on photos and marking up PDF's, note taking, and lazy tablet computing on the couch it's very nice to be able to prod with the fingers and scribble with the pen.
I also love the trackpoint. Can't stand the trackpad, so I changed palmrests and got rid of it.
If i didn't have the option to convert to tablet mode I don't think I'd use the touch screen at all. -
