I received my T60p and I have Windows XP Pro.

I see that you can order your copy of Vista from Lenovo. I am not sure which one to get 32-bit or 64bit version?

I am confused as to which way the future is going... I know XP had/has 64-bit versions out, but they weren't very useful for the average consumer since there weren't many native 64-bit applications.

    Any insights?

My guess is that you'll get the 32 bit version since I think the 64 bit comes later.

As far as I know Vista DVD will contain both versions.
There are some feature differences between 32 and 64 bit versions (like HD playback, security).

When I filled my upgrade thing out (incorrectly I might add... messed up my address number) it only had the option of 32bit vista business for my Core 2 Duo T60.

The retail version of Vista is supposed to be both 32 bit and 64 bit.
The OEM versions however is only 32 bit or 64 bit.
So if ordering from lenovo you will only get one of them.

In my opinion you'd want the 64 bit (but I'm a tech-freak :p). Although except for what Darius_LT said, theres probably not gonna be much of a difference.

In the very beginning there might be some issues but they'll probably be sorted out quickly. XP64 never had any impact on the market. Vista certainly will so 64 bit applications will be developed but even running 32 bit applications on a 64 bit OS could improve performance because of drivers. But probably not alot.
My guess is that Vista is the last OS from MS that is available for 32 bit (for computers).

My main point is however that theres not supposed to be any drawbacks with 64 bit vista, just benefits. At least not in the long run.

Do the Core 2 Duos have full 64-bit capability though? I heard on Thinkpads.com that the data path is not all 64-bit even though the CPU is.

What about driver support? I've read that that's a HUGE problem in xp64. Does vista somehow eliminate the problem?

Vista 32bit and 64bit are being release at the SAME TIME from Microsoft, and yes Microsoft has confirmed that vista will be last version of windows to support 32 bit.

about core2duo performance on 64bit, you can see the following benchmarks and decide for yourself. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core2duo-64bit.html

and also, the driver support problem with vista 64 will not be anywhere close to the nightmare it was with xp 64, since xp 64 never really got introduced by OEMs. and i'm sure it will not be same with vista. i would say go for the 64 bit version, you wont lose anything.

iatacs19, you are not going to get free VISTA from LENOVO, instead, it is from Lenovo partner. I just did my order from it, and I have to wait my VISTA after Jan.2007.

Which receipt are you faxing in? Your order confirmation, or something else. I am not sure of what they want to see as a proof of purchase

Even though Vista64 will be available and there really is nothing to lose by choosing it, I have a feeling that Vista32 will still be more popular and that most notebook users will choose Vista32.

I also heard from a knowledgeable friend that older 32bit apps run marginally slower on 64bit operating systems than if it had been run on a 32bit os.

How soon do you have to order Vista from Lenovo? A friend of mine ordered a Dell notebook in Germany and he can wait until March to get Vista, which leaves enough time to ponder the better choice.
