Hi
I am planning to buy a laptop of around $700.
Am getting both R60 (2GHz Intel Intel Core Duo T2500 / 1GB DDR2 SDRAM / 80GB Hard Drive , 15in 1400 x 1050 Display / Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 )
and Z61e Intel Core 2 Duo T7200(2.00GHz) 15.4" Wide XGA 1GB 80GB Intel GMA X3100 - at almost the same price. The z series also has Intel Centrino Duo Mobile Technology.
which would be a better choice for general usage.

You may be able to do better, have a look at Lenovo Outlet - there are some pretty good deals on the R and the T series. The website will give you a good idea of what you can get for your money, but you have to call to find out what's available. Most go for the T series so you might have good luck finding a decently equipped R61 for general use between $600-$800.
The Z looks like the better choice from your two options although I don't know too much about either. -
Definitely look at Lenovo Outlet as the above poster suggested. If you can, try and extend your budget and get a T Series.

also if you can try to get a coupon to use -
The T series is definitely worth the money over the R series in my opinion. Although the differences between theT61 and T61p are very minimal.

I would do the Z over the R, the Z is a pretty nice box and I believe a little more compact. Bear in mind the Z has been retired, as most of the multimedia features have appeared in the T series or others... Saw a Z series box at Sams Club the other day, pretty sharp chassis.
Which is better Z or R series thinkpad
