How big a chance will they replace a screen due to brightness imbalance?

Probably not great odds but it never hurts to try but make it way more dramatic than it really is.

Also use the girlfriend (got me a new iPod) after I tried and failed

All Thinkpad screens suck. They are matte and low contrast compared to glossy counterparts you see at best buy. Keep that in mind when ordering a thinkpad - the best laptop for the money bar none. Really too bad.

I disagree as well. I had an awesome screen on my Asus W7S, but my T61 Samsung screen is still very nice. There are no uneven lit areas, although there is a slight leakage at the bottom. The screen fares nicely even in well lit areas and I used it outdoors this past weekend and didn't have any issues with it. I always had a hard time with the screen I tried to use my W7S outside.

I did hear that LG screens are better and all that, but I guess I'm one of the few that got something good out of Samsung. I'm really happy with the screen I got.
