    Hello,
I have the option of two Thinkpad X60's. My current model of 1708P8M is being replaced.

    ThinkPad X60 1708-HEM
Original description: T7200(2GHz), 1GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 12.1in 1024x768 LCD, Intel 950, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Vodafone WWAN, Bluetooth/Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 8c Li-Ion batt, WinVista Business

    or

    ThinkPad X61 7676-3PM
    Original description: T7100(1.8GHz), 1GB RAM, 80GB 5400rpm HD, 12.1in 1024x768 LCD, Intel X3100, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, Fingerprint reader, 8c Li-Ion, WinVista Business

Granted the X61 is Santa Rosa, how much better is it? The x60 has Vodafone WANN which would be useful, but I can get a USB modem if the X61 is a better laptop.

    Thanks,
    Scott

Lenovo said it will be here in Australia soon...

Was that an answer to my question?

    Thanks

My initial thought would be -- all things being roughly equal -- to go with the latest technology. I don't think a WANN outweighs Santa Rosa. However, the issue of battery life and screen just might. Initial reviews on the new T61s were surprising in that the batteries were smaller and battery life not on par with the T60s. Is the same true for the X61s? The screens on the X60/61 are identical in resolution, but what about viewing angles, brightness etc.? A search of threads on X60 screens might provide info on what questions to ask. Eager to hear the answers.... :)

Santa Rosa is a debateable "upgrade", much like Sonoma was.
From what I've read, I'd rather NOT have it (for its reputation as a power pig).

The 7200rpm 100gb is worth a lot more than the 5400 80gb . This will make a much greater impact on performance.

Add the wwan and secure chip. And the ibm logo. So it's a no-brainer for me, i'd take the first one. And I'd ask for XPP instead of Vista. More business-class users are ordering XPP because Vista is buggy, incompatible with 90% of drivers out there, and most apps dont run on it.

Thanks :) I ordered the 1708HEM. I've got an extra RAM 1gb RAM chip to add as well. I like Vista, so will order Vista.

Trade-offs... I read good stuff about the new integrated graphics, but i sure wish I had the 7200 rpm HD, mine is only 5400. Mind you the year before they were about 4000 rpm on the X.

I think the one you ordered will be the better performer overall, because most apps tend to be IO bound and you got a fast drive.

    Why do you like Vista?

I have found it more stable than XP on my desktop. New Audio Stack works better with my USB Stereo. I like the breadcrumb bar and inbuilt searching etc.
    :)
    Cheers

interesting... i dont have vista so i dont have a direct opinion.
    just complaints i've read
and alleged lack of support on the part of 3rd party software/drivers etc.
