I am still getting used to windows again so please bare with me. I have XP Pro. I assume that things I turn off in MSCONFIG just means that it doesn't start up, but if the program or process is required that once that function is clicked on it loads up anyway right? It's more of a speed thing? I'd rather have a quicker start up on boot up obviously if but not sure how much time I really save. Not to mention I usually have a gig and a half of excess RAM I never go anywhere near to using so I've got memory to spare. What exactly does reducing processes do then?

So having said that, which of the following processes might not be necessary to have on startup and I can check mark it off in MSCONFIG? (some of these might not be thinkpad but some windows related, but if not needed I would love your advice):

    PWMGRTR
    BatLogEx
    SynTPLpr
    SynTPEnh
    EzejMnAp
    TpKmapAp
    TpShocks
    TPOSDSVC
    tp4ex
    Smax4
    LPMGR
    jusched
    scheduler_proxy
    ccApp
    VPTRAY
    pdservice
    cssauth
    ERTS0749
    smax4pnp
    Reader_sl
    GoogleDesktop
    TPFNF7SP
    ctfmon
    DrvMon
    WMPNSCFG
    Bluetooth
    Digital Line Detect
    HOTSYNCSHORTCUTNAME

Are there any that any of you chose to turn off but didn't ruin functionality of it (ie. Reader_sl I think is for PDFs to load faster).

    Thanks,
    S

any process in the startup tab of msconfig can be disabled without making the computer malfunction. the less of them are starting up, the quicker your boot will be. one way to do this is to disable all of them, then see what didn't start up that you would like to, and enable them one at a time. google is a great way to identify what processes do what.

The startup tab only contains programs you installed, but the OS stuff. You should google each one to see if you actually want it. Each entry takes a bit of memory and adds to your startup time.

under the general tab, select Diagnostic Startup. That should stop anything that's not critical to the OS from starting.

Thanks for the replies. I'll play around with which thinkpad ones need to be started, it's those which I was more unsure of. I've been using google but they're not always specific with the thinkpad ones as to what definitely has to be running.
