Which should I go for ? I like the faster processor, a slightly larger screen and lower price of T400s. I like satin finish in the palmrest, smaller footprint and lighter weight of x301.![]()

it depends on what you'll use it for, of course, but i'd go for the t400s for its lower price and ultrabay. the difference in battery life is negligible. the larger screen comes with the larger footprint, so i'll count that as a wash. the slightly lighter weight of the x301 is outweighed (yik) by the t400s' faster processor unless you'll be using the machine mostly on the go, or for simple tasks only.
that said, i own an x200s and do not regret at all the small screen or lightweight processor. and if you keep an eye out you can find x301's on ebay for ~$1,000 ( http://cgi.ebay.com/Lenovo-ThinkPad...ptops_Nov05?hash=item3efa4f759d#ht_577wt_1165) -

Lenovo's Matt Kohut back in August had recently switched from a X301 to a T400s as his personal machine that travels with him. He far preferred the T400s for its snappier performance. (Both had SSDs, IIRC.)
Came across this deal on T400s the other day.
Happy shopping! -
woaah isnt that a really good price for the T400s?
i'd easily take the X301 if it had a beefier processor, but since it doesnt, go T400s all the way. -

X is too small. if you want portability on occassion then go to walmart and get the cheapest netbook on Black Friday. With that price gap you will end up with 2 new machines for the price of a used X. Dats what I wood do.

I used to be a big smaller/portable is better kind of person, but after using a bunch of machines, I would go with the T400s.
As mentioned, the expandability and performance are key, as it the larger screen. It's not that much bigger, but the overall experiences is better.
The X301 is nice; if you only need a browser/email/office automation/media device, it's great, and very portable. The light weight is a bonus if you have to lug it a lot.
I think you could get a T400s and an Ideapad S12 (12" netbook) for the price of an x301, and you would ahead of the game. Use the T400s as the "workhorse", and the S-12 when you are on the go. -
I am a bit biased, since I just ordered, and received my new X301 today. So far, I think I definitely made the right choice. In fact, I was in the same situation as you are in now. Except there was not that much in price difference. I had a fully loaded T400s (Multi-Touch screen, 128GB SSD, etc.) and a somewhat fully loaded X301 for almost $500USD cheaper then the T400s (both brand new from Lenovo). I went with the X301. I wanted a laptop that I can take anywhere with me, and not know it's there. (Ie. airport, airplane, coffee shops, laundromat, back yard, in the car, etc.) I've read just about all of the reviews regarding the X301 vs. T400s, and basically what it boils down to is portability. If you want a super ultra slim, go-anywhere laptop, fully equipped with all the goodies without having to add much yourself (it already has GPS, an SSD, bluetooth etc.) then the X301 is for you. If you want a slim notebook with performance, then the T400s is the clear choice. I didn't need performance, because I use my T61 15.4 inch display laptop as my primary "desktop replacement" machine, so I did NOT need an ultra-portable with a lot of horsepower. The X301 is a GREAT laptop. I blows the T61 away as far as looks, feel, and durability. I did a VERY brief review of my new X301 in this forum. The T400s is not QUITE is small/thin as the X301, but it's not supposed to be. The T400s was supposed to be a cross between the T400, and the X301. (AKA, people who want performance, but not *quite* as small/thin laptop as an X300/301). Again, both are great, expensive, top of the line flagship Lenovo Thinkpad models, it's just what you want/need out of your new laptop will decide on which direction to go.
Good luck with your decision, and please let us know which one you get . -
I am sorely tempted to try the S-12 netbook with nVidia as a "Ghetto X301"
Which thinkpad to go for ?
