Guys, I have a T440s which I got in Dec, 2013. I have recently noticed a faint white spot in the middle of my screen, noticeable much more on a light background especially white. I cant notice it on a black background. I can see it in bios too so I don't think its a software issue. Will I have to return this laptop now?

    Does it look like this?

X220 IPS display problem - weird bright spot on th... - Lenovo Community

It's caused by pressure applied on the screen. Lenovo considers it physical damage going by the experiences of X220 and X230 owners, so your luck in getting the screen replaced may vary. I had one on my X220 but I was able to get the screen replaced because it was exhibiting significant ghosting issues. Sucks to hear the T440s is affected by it too.

Good luck to you. Lenovo will blame you for damaging it, causing the white spot. I went through an ORDEAL a few years back with an X230t that had a few white spots out of the box. Bought it from Abes of Maine (NEVER do that, by the way) and ended up emailing the CEO to eventually get it resolved.

Lenovo told me I damaged it. So did Abes of Maine. I persisted and did not give up. It was eventually replaced, as it should have been from the start.

I guess if you bought direct from Lenovo they will work with you on a more open basis, but a reseller will not. Good luck.

Well this is bull. How do they advertise this product as being "rugged" or "military tested", its only been a month. I'll call them tomorrow and see what they say.

Do you have the LG or AUO? With the X220, it was a persistent issue for many owners. I had the screen replaced once, and when the second was due they replaced the machine (because of another concurrent problem). Hopefully this doesn't end up being widespread like before. If you send it to Lenovo depot, they will tell you that it was damage. If you have On-Site use that and there won't be any problem. If you have Depot warranty, find a local Lenovo service provider through the Lenovo site and they can order the parts and replace it. That's how I handled it with my X220 without any issues.

Generally these pressure marks are from physical damage. One common cause is closing the lid with an object on the keyboard like a pen. Unless you have accidental damage coverage they won't fix this type of problem, but you can try.

I had a T61 that had the bottom 3/8" of the screen not working. I sent it to depot ans was told the screen was cracked. I found this difficult to accept but figured there may have been a tiny crack that severed the circuits to the effected area so I didn't argue the point and I had them complete other repairs and return it so I could swap out the screen. When I got it back the entire screen was smashed and it had red stickers showing where all the cracks started and stopped. None of that damage was present when I sent it off and I had photos of the screen to prove it, but it wasn't worth wasting my time since I had about a dozen other screens on the shelf to replace it.

In the future I'll send a photograph of the screen problem along with the laptop because this one was obviously damaged in transit or while at the depot. I also didn't appreciate the white labels they put on my harddrive, optical drive and battery that they wrote my case number on. The cheap paper labels were nearly impossible to remove and left residue behind. Little details like that really bug me.

Hi Mephistopheles, I have the same issue, I got my T440p with FHD panel in Dec 2013. I now notice two bright spots, probably the same as yours, more visibale when bright, and not visible when screen is in black. If these are really caused by myself, by pressure, I have to say the new T440p must be worse than a consumer grade, at least in the aspect of protecting the LCD screen. I had my T400 for 5 years, and has been carrying it almost everyday , and its LCD is still perfect. However, my T400 was not an IPS panel, and I just learnt that only IPS panel suffers this.

I have talked to Lenovo over the phone, and the representative agreed to have LCD replaced, and has shipped me the depot box. I am about to ship the depot box back. Now I really want to return the T440p.

I had the same problem with my T440s and I got the screen replaced. My earlier screen was AUO and the new one is LG. Although the new LG one does not have any such spots, I find it is inferior in quality when compared to the AUO one. :(

I don't know whether mine is LG or AUO, in addition to the white spots, I also notice vertical faint yellow strips (not very noticeable though, but definitely is there since I have asked several co-wokers to look at the screen). Very unpleasant.

How long did it take for you to have the screen replaced ?

I did not have an on-site support and had to do a bring-in one. It took a month. The service only took a day. 1 hour to be exact. However, the local retail store took 2 weeks to send the laptop to the support where it spent furthur 2 weeks waiting for the new display to arrive. It was a drag after all.

    Thanks tsh,
I have received the depot box directly from Lenovo, and hopefully it won't last that long.

Thanks! Here is my experience so far with the LCD replacement.
I called the Lenovo on a Friday, and the guy agreed to ship out a box. I told him the spots are not dead pixels, nor light bleed from the edge, but are in the middle of the panel. He immediately said that they will replace the LCD for me. The second week I received the depot box, and shipped back with my laptop, and the third week Friday (today), I received my laptop back with LCD replaced, from a Full HD IPS to a 1600 x 900 screen.

I was not happy, and called lenovo again at 9pm on Friday. Somebody picked up the phone, and apologized and said because it is their mistake, he will send out a panel to a repair person and have him to come to my home to fix it. Hope this won't take too long.

How unfortunate! Hope they let you keep the 1600X900 screen so you might either sell it or keep it as a backup panel for an emergency.

    No they won't.

Having said that, mistakes happen. They seem to be handling this one appropriately for now.

Let's hope that the onsite tech doesn't receive the wrong panel...

Exactly, I was so worried about custom services after reading complains from forums. But I am Okay with what has happened so far, and hopefully the issue can be resolved soon.
