    Heya, is it actually true that LG once built for a few cycles of IBM Thinkpads? I'm just curious because I'm interested in an LG laptop but they're not as established as say, ASUS or Dell or something. But then, if it's true they built for IBM Thinkpads, they must be of very good quality right?

    The logic doesn't quite follow. It is about what standard they are built to, not which manufacturer built them.

    Well in some ways it might hold true. For example, would you rather buy a $25,000 Volvo, or $25,000 Kia?

    One company's lower quality bracket could be the extras of their high end lines (R60's sharing T60 motherboards and such). While the highend kias have still low quality bits under, and a flashy shell?

    The ODMs build what they are told.

    LG used to manufacture IBM Thinkpads in S.Korea and sell them as "LG-IBM"

    with different logo(Only in S.Korea)

    So, LG made them, sell them, and provide service for them.

    Their quality was outstanding, and the SERVICE WAS

    THE BEST! ; LG is one of the most popular brand in S.Korea with Samsung

    and LG has 25 service centre only in Seoul.

    However, IBM sold their pc division to Lenovo and the contract between

    IBM and LG is over now so LG does not manufacture Thinkpads anymore.

    Everybody's complaining about this because Lenovo's customer service

    sucks and the quality is not as good as before.

    Your analogy is flawed. It's more like VW building a $200k Lamborghini. Do you know that Lambo is owned by the VW group?

    Like ZaZ said, the one who builds these Lenovo laptops are doing what they are told to do. I don't think it really matters who builds it. If product X is built by company A and company B, you are going to get the same product X and same quality anyway from A and B. Nobody could tell the difference.

    IBM != Lenovo
    therefore the analogy is like 25k Hyundai < 25k Opel

    Except that I have yet to see any convincing evidence that shows that standards have dropped because of the IBM->Lenovo transition. I've seen annoyed people with various things, but nothing on the physical build of the machines that actually indicates a significant difference in quality. And I've seen people with horror stories over tech support, but also some who had that with IBM and then have had great support with Lenovo.
