Anyone here want to own up and admit to breaking a precious precious ThinkPad? Right now I am in the midst of replacing the case of someones T61 that he managed to shatter (as well as tweak the unibody). Overall the repair isnt that costly, only ~52 bucks for a new shell.

My X31 took two falls off my desk. Broke the case on each side and cracked the port replicator. Everything still worked fine after reseating the hard drive. Not recommended though.

I bent over one time to tie my shoe and my backpack was open. The laptop slid out. Luckly my neck kinda caught it and it didn't even hit hard.

haha....wow...well...considering how many times he's dropped it, the damage is rather minimal?

Yea, What i am thinking caused it, was me leaving it on the edge of a table and someone ended up knocking it off on that side...which when i was dum enough to drop it for show...i closed it and dropped it two feet flat onto carpet(not hardwood floor lol) But yea..after dropping it several times, it still felt just fine. Actually, could be bad, but i may have used the laptop for two days without noticing the crack, so it might have gotten worse from what original caused it..so...it held up too well lol, i was browsing on it just before i sent it to kevin :p

I don't understand this whole thread. So you dropped it intentionally also? Can I ask why? You have money to burn?

Yea, I guess you could say I was a bit dum or overconfident in its durability, but i didnt think dropping it from 1-2ft onto carpet did much at all lol..i knew it was dum to do more..but after this(yes the drop that did this was 4-5ft onto hardwood floor..never would do that) I think ill quit doing it :p..except maybe from a inch from the floor..hehe

I baby my thinkpad too. And I am really embarassed at a small accident I've had with it.

I went into the case to replace the keyboard. I have an extra screw kit and replaced two screws. The thing is I didn't realize that these screws were a little longer than the normal. A couple of days later I noticed a couple of metal dimples on the top. They are the screws.

One of these days I'll need to order a palmrest. :(

Quick anecdote. I took my T61p to tennis practice one day to do homework. I was sitting about 15 feet behind and parallel to the baseline. Typing away, I really didn't notice that someone had served and the person they were serving to had completely missed the ball. The ball smacked into my Thinkpad right in the middle of the back of the cover. It was pretty amazing to be using my Thinkpad while i felt it absorbed the force of a tennis ball traveling at 40/50 mph. The screen didn't even move which just shows the how stable the chassis can be in addition to the hinges. The cover was also w/o a scratch, bump or dent. Otherwise, I try to keep my Thinkpad as safe as possible and have yet to experience any damage aesthetically or physically to date.

I have yet to break any of mine. But i have seen several that have come in from the field with everything from a shattered screen, to many parts of the lid and body cracked, missing pieces and missing keys. The worst is the corners.
What amazes me is how people treat their notebooks when they do not pay for them (company owned). I swear some people use them as Frisbees.

Well, my Thinkpad was on my lap... If you calculate the angle of the ball, which is somewhere near downwards, and consider the position I was in (on the ground) then that would mean my Thinkpad saved me from something much worse and maybe more painful. ;) IMO anyways.

If your computer has droppage and spillage insurance, please don't drop it intentionally, because it raises up the price for insurance for everyone.

    I would not advise it.

They are designed as a safety measure, not a user feature. You will most likely damage the keyboard longterm and possible seep fluid onto the motherboard. It is not a sealed system, but one that directs most fluids out through exit holes. If the notebook is tilted slightly back, it wont drain out, and if you tip your notebook over the water will dump onto the motherboard through the sides.

Think of it as something to minimize damage, not completely prevent it.

Just not worth it for me. It's an investment, not an experimental device. However, whatever happens, happens, and when it survives you can make a terrrific story out of it. But... on the rare occurence your notebook had a defect and you decide to test out that water resistant feature, you'd have 1) a product that didn't live up to the hype and 2) a defunct tool.

Thinkpads are bulletproof i think. (lol)
Look, I have a antique (not old) T42 wich I use for my personal stuffs only and because i love her and I wanna marry her. (Until my new T61p comes in and the old T42 will be jealous). I have drop it, step on it, kick it accidentally, drop it again, leaved on the sun for more than 4 hours (where I live, the weather is HOT [35 degree celsius almost all the time]), spilled coke on it, and even borrowed to my sister (womens who doesn't know how to use a USB memory are dangerous for laptops survivor); and the t42 it's fine. With lots of scars, but those are war signs!.

About the spill...do it with a little dosis of coke or you'll be typing for the next months a "sticky non-confortable/flea appealing" keyboard.

If u wanna know the story of any of the incidents, just ask.

By the way, i'm using a Lenovo 3000 N100 now, and I dropped like twice and it;s fine too.

PD: in the university, some people call me butterfingers. It's just outrageous how people can be just mean with people who doesn't have the ability to "hold well" stuffs.

i love my thinkpad. and i just baby it. i take care of my thinkpad at the time. i have bought a 5yr warranty, Brenthaven Expandable Trek Backpack, and a CaseLogic reversible neoprene sleeve(waterproof). i go to college and i am in the military so i am the run. i need all of them . it just protects my data better. well you know something. i know people who dont care about ther thinkpads but you know something ther thinkpads just die after a year of two. and plus people get ther thinkpads through work. so they dont even care it isnt thers.

i just think if it like this" you may have a tank but you have to make sure you protect it with all the armor you can get because ther i will be a day when it will get hit"

What would happen if I bought a 3 year accident warranty, and say, near the end of the warranty, 'accidentally' destroyed my laptop? Would Lenovo send me a laptop that's new in 2011, like a T81, for example?

Backpack incident on mine too. It was an old model, 5 or 6 years ago. I was out on business in New York and had a long drive to NJ as I try to squeeze in visiting a friend. When I got there, I quickly picked up my luggage from the trunk, opened the rear passenger doors for my backpack. I swung the bag to my back and there it flew at a height of 5ft. It landed 5ft from me with a solid thunk and crack.

A big piece of the edge came off. Similar to the photo in this thread, but all the casing from the crack to the edge came off.

I was concerned with my business data, as I kept it on SLEEP. I turned it ON and was still working like a charm.

I'm a bit rough on my notebooks. I worked for the company and pretty much changed thinkpads every year. When I left, I personally bought a toshiba and an HP. Money was an issue, so I compromised. They both didn't last as long. Both had alot issues I didn't get with my thinkpads. I almost bought a thinkpad at a good price but canceled cause it took 2months to get. Got impatient and bought the HP. I miss the keyboard, black, solid build and mostly the trackpoint.

my cousin was bored at work and poured water into his t60 thinking it would drain. it wasn't sitting on the table flat and he turned it 5 minutes after pouring the water... he sent it back for a new keyboard and system board. he's dumb.
