My real estate agent was over to my house and saw my new T61. He says, nice notebook, you know they were bought out by some Chinese company about 5 months ago? I said IBM owns Lenovo. He says, no, they were just bought by some Chinese company.
I really don't care, I just want to know how I should have replied.
1. Mike, you're FOS as usual. Or...
2. Really, I didn't know that, how interesting. Or...
3. Yeah, I remember seeing all those Chinese city names when following
it's build, so that's what that meant!
Really, it doesn't matter to me who owns Lenovo but I really thought it was IBM.![]()

As of May 31, 2007, 39.6% of Lenovo is owned by public shareholders, 42.4% by Legend Holdings Limited, 7.9% by IBM and 10.1% by Texas Pacific Group, General Atlantic LLC and Newbridge Capital LLC. Because the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a Chinese government agency, owns 65% of Legend Holdings, effectively the Chinese government owns about 27.5% of Lenovo and is the largest shareholder.
It is headquartered in Beijing, China -
Actually it's the other way round. Lenovo owns IBM. And Lenovo is a Chinese company. Actually, more accurately, Lenovo owns IBM's PC division.

OK, correct answer to Mike should have been:
It's more complicated than that. But I think you're still FOS most of the time. -
you should have replied:
2. Really, I didn't know that, how interesting
i'm not sure how long ago.. but its more than a year ago i think...
but YES! Lenovo bought IBM PC division (as Andrew said), and now they produced, designed, and engineered thinkpad notebook. as far as i know; the quality of the thinkpad line has not been compromised. -
So was it ever correct to say IBM bought Lenovo? That was what I'd originally heard when looking for a notebook (which now it seems was after Lenovo bought the IBM PC Division...or whatever). Color me
-
-
I thought IBM own lenovo guess it is the other way around
-
From my understanding Lenovo was in charge of thinkpad production even when ibm owned the thinkpad trademark for some time...just a note...
-
Small correction IBM sold their PC Division to Lenovo.
-
My T60 was made after IBM sold to Lenovo. The Computer says IBM on the palm rest but the original AC adapter said Lenovo.
-
No disrespect, but what really is the point of this thread?
-
LENOVO bought over IBM's PC division. LENOVO is a Chinese company. Hence, the Chinese makes Thinkpads. Makes sense?

FWIW the big names in laptops don't actually build their own laptops. IOW the likes of Apple, Dell, HP, Sony, Toshiba, etc. contract other companies to build laptops for them--most likely Asus, Clevo, Compal, and Quanta--and all of companies are headquartered in Taiwan/China with assembly plants in Taiwan/China.
Cases in point:
Asus builds Apple laptops.
Clevo builds Alienware and Sager laptops.
Compal builds Compaq, Dell, HP, and Toshiba laptops.
Quanta builds Dell and Sony laptops.
This has been going on for years BTW and is nothing new.
So if one's somehow worried about Lenovo's acquisition of IBM's PC division, one might want to give a thought as to who all actually built the laptop one was already using prior to buying a Lenovo. -
I have a T60 that says IBM ThinkPad on the Cover and Palm rest. I wanted a ThinkPad. I love that mine says IBM. I have Loved the IBM ThinkPad series for years. Now, I have my own personal ThinkPad.
As long as it looks, feels & performs like the IBM ThinkPad of Old, I don't care who owns the Company. The continued Quality Factor, I do care about!!
Got ThinkPad!!

I drive a Honda and a Toyota, my dining room table was made in Vietnam, one of my mountain bikes was assembled in Taiwan. I'm the last guy to worry about globalization or where my shiz comes from. And if I hadn't started this thread how would you know I don't care who owns Lenovo? Makes sense to me. -

Lenovo's CEO is an American who used to run Dell's Asia-Pacific operations, and the key engineers of the Thinkpad line are in Yamato, Japan.

I've not ever intentionally come in here trying to upset or disrespect anyone. If fact, if you look at my history, you'll see that I ask questions that I truly feel are legitimate. You've even answered some of my questions for me in the past, so again, you can get all defensive if you'd like, but I meant no harm.
Who owns Lenovo?
