Greetings Thinkpadders!
Just wanted to hear who's still rockin or lovin the standard screens
I love my standard screen T61 even though its off center...makes it unique I guess haha..pplz constantly ask "how old is your computer?" since the standard screen stand out in the sea of widescreen in my classes...alot of the girls have made comments that I must be broke since I'm using such an old looking computer...it feels like HS all over again esp since I use to drive a civic...sure it may not look cool but it serves its purpose well..just like my thinkpad...its sad that the guys with Dell are getting more love these days..them and their fancy glossy widescreens haha

I have a standard screen, too since I don't like widescreen (it's only good for watching movies)

Hey Stringbean,
The matte screen is one of the reasons I just bought a new T61p. Now, I am getting the 15.4" widescreen because I do like the AVI movies. The other advantage is sitting in the tourist section of a flight and a widescreen hopefully fits a little better when the seat in front is pushed back.
I hate the glossy screens though. But, I guess it's a personal preference thing.
Enjoy HS!

ok, here are my 2cents
before i bought a 15.4" T61 i didn't like widescreens, as i'm developer and need vertical space, always thought that wide screen don't give me what i want.. but this is true if resolution is 1280x800, i have 1680x1050, and all is ok.. because everything is smaller i have enough space.. V and H.. my eyes are ok.. got used with this res.. now when i go to university and sit at some 1280x800 laptop ) it's strage for me ) -
My new T61p has standard screen.
And my old T42p also has standard screen.
I used to use widescreen only one time however I dont like it I never use widescreen again.
Widescreen! looks ugly too many usesless spaces next to keyboard. -
I am baffled at Lenovo and its marketing ethos why the hell they did not provide the option of webcam with std screen else I would have gone for one I got a 14" WS T61 , which is very much unlike a traditional IBM thinkpad former is bulky and flimsy build quality.
The extra space around the keyboard would collapse if one was to handle it a tad roughly .Hitachi HDD too heats up fast and makes helluva noise.
I guess HP's businees line of notebooks is a better option (specially now that there aint IBM tag to boot) -
standard screen and XP here.
loving it. -
I need to get work done, not watch movies or play games.
I love my standard (XGA too!), non-glossy screen and XP. Couldn't imagine having to carry around a widescreen laptop. -
Me
I can't stand glossy, wide screens -
On a 14" screen I prefer SXGA+ though the higher resolution does on occasion cause eye strain for me. I find the 1050 vertical resolution to be more useful for the things I do like Internet and Office. On a 15" notebook it doesn't matter so much as they are both 1050.
I like my SXGA+ screen, but it's a relatively dim for my tastes and it's a bit washed out. I'm not really doing anything where I need a great screen. It can't hold a candle to my T42 which had the FlexView screen. My next notebook will probably have a glossy screen. The glossiness can be annoying at times, but they're so much brighter and look a lot better in my opinion. There's no right answer just whatever floats your boat. -
A widescreen is useful for a lot more if you're running 1920x1200 resolution. That number of pixels is not as useful on a standard screen.
The ability to have two windows at a decent size, side-by-side is priceless. -
You can't run 1920x1200 on a standard screen.

I am thinking of getting a 14" T61 .. at first I wanted to go with the widscreen but now I'm thinking that the shortened height would result in more scrolling with working with documents and web pages. I think with a larger screen a wide screen format might make more sense, but with this smaller size I don't want to give up the extra screen real-estate.
Too bad it appears that no integrated web cam is offered with the 14" standard screen.
Still trying to decide about the resolution to get with the T61. Right now I am using my T23 at 1024 by 768 (XGA?) .. I wonder if SXGA+ might be too small? Anyone try both and have opinions to offer?
I have started to use reading glasses -
I am debating on standard or widescreen. I want to get a new laptop. My current Fujitsu S7110 is Standard 14" which I actually like.
Is this true about the webcam not available on 14 Standard? I actually really want this feature. -

Yeah I'm currently using standard aspect 15.0". I don't mind it, but I do prefer 1680x1050 to 1400x1050. Plus 16:10 just makes a more aesthetically pleasing rectangle. Very close to the golden ratio.

I prefer widescreens for watching movies, but that's about it. The main reason I am not to fond of widescreen is the increased width footprint. For instance my 12.1" X61 is less wide than a 12.1 widescreen ultraportable like the Toshiba R500. Even the 11.1" Sony Vaio TZ is wider.
-
I dont like glossy, matte for me and off centre is fine. Dont see what all the hoo haa is about it being off centre
-
I think my first TP, the 560x had an off-center screen too, but I may be mistaken.
-
I definitely prefer 4:3 screen over the widescreen. and I would also choose non-glassy screen over glassy one.
-
I have really come to like this matte screen on the T61 .... I thought I would miss the glossy screens of the other laptops .. .. ..
-
Just got my X61 the other day and I am loving the 4:3 matte screen.

As much as I have failed to see the superiority of widescreen for any purpose other than watching DVDs, I figure I will probably hold my nose and go widescreen when I buy a replacement Thinkpad. There are times when it does make sense to go with flow--I figure most software and web pages will ultimately be designed for widescreen.
Ultimately, however, I ask "If widescreen really is superior for so many purposes as its advocates claim, why wasn't it adapted 10 or even 20 years ago ? It didn't require a technological breakthrough to change the screen ratio on a notebook." -
Personally, I think widescreen is becoming a norm now because of the technological advancements that have progressed. I mean think about it, multitasking is so common nowadays that we can do things side by side because we have the power to do so. Back in the day, it was just single tasks or piling window over window. We have the hardware capable to perform side by side tasks and the widescreen format is very fitting.
Or maybe I'm just a nutcase lol. -
It doesn't have anything to do with technological advancement. You gain more through vertical space for everything but spreadsheets and movies. It's purely a cost cutting by the manufacturers, just as glosssy screens are.
-
That's another good point that widescreens are cheaper to manufacture. I prefer widescreens over standard because you can't compare websites on top of one another. It's more logical to do it side by side for web development. And also, personal preference, I'm not a fan of my square laptop bags; I like them to be rectangular because they fit well in briefcases and messenger bags and even back packs.
-
If I had a large desktop monitor, I could see the benefit of widescreen, and some applications, such as using IDEs (e.g., Eclipse) would definetly benefit from the WS format.
However, for me with a 14" the standard will be just fine, as most of my work involves writing documents, reading web pages and some code development (using emacs) - having more vertical space is good.
I do get screen quality envy though when I look at some new laptop screens :-| -
Stringbean - if the girls are picking the guys for how their notebooks look, you're hangin wit the wrong peeps....
-
Actually, I think that 4:3 screens are cool just because they are becoming more and more vintage
-
I just got a nice widescreen 1080p 57" HDTV, but for my laptop, it will always be standard.
-
I hope Lenovo sticks with the standard screen for the next X Series. The standard screen ratio keeps the overall size of the notebook the smallest and balanced. A widescreen business notebook just looks weird IMO.
-
If I had a big monitor on my desk, I would consider going widescreen assuming I would be able to read two word documents next to each other w/o trouble, but for a small screen format ws doesn't get you anything IMHO, other than a smaller screen. -

As mentioned, current 11" and 12" widescreen ultraportables are wider than i.e. the X61.
Who's still lovin them standard screens?
