The release of the next generation of thinkpads have received immense interest from everyone. I'm curious to know who will be sticking with their current thinkpad? if so..how long have you had it for?
-
-
I will be. I just bought my T61 in February, and there is nothing wrong with it, and am perfectly happy with it, so why blow another $1500 + on a new one ?
-
I'll have to stick with my current T61; I can't afford to purchase a new notebook. I just priced a realistic configuration of a T400 on the Lenovo website (not the stripped down model with the bait-and-switch price) and it came to just over $2,000.
It looks like there is a lot to like in the T400's, and the engineers seem to have worked on correcting the design flubs of the T61's.
I've had my T61 just over a year (and still haven't figured out how to eject it from the dock when it's hibernated). -
I am sticking with mine, even though it is really tempting to buy a T400. I only got my ThinkPad in December.
-
I'm sticking with mine because it's the 14.1" 4:3 LCD.
-
I'm sticking to my year-old T61. Who has $1500+ to blow on a new laptop every year or so????
-
i have an old 4 yr old T40p that i use only occasionally.
would like a 15.4" brand new laptop to complement my desktop so i can be far more mobile.
considering the HP dv5t (P8400 processor, good all around); maybe the upcoming Dell xps update, or the T61 or T500.
my question is: why would someone pay $300 to $500 more for a T500 than a similarly configured T61? With no backlit LED screen option to choose from yet on the T500, the only truly significant difference (that i can tell) is that you can get the P series processors on the T500. that would eek out a bit more battery life and a bit less heat. Would 15 to 20 more mins of battery life and a bit less heat be worth $300 to $500?
i don't quite get it.
please educate me.
thx in advance. -
actually, I think the penryn type processors are also in the T61s, no? yea, this is not a wothwhile upgrade.
-
Have to say as someone in the market for a T61p I'm a bit stuck what to do now. I need as much screen real estate as possible and the T500 only goes up to 1680x1050 (not a bad resolution for a 15").
There are some really good deals on at the moment for a Penryn T61. Will there actually be much difference between a current T61p and a T500/W500? -
I'll be sticking with mine for a while still. I only got it in June and it serves for all my purposes.
-
It is not really a matter of why would you pay more for a T500, but rather would you be interested in paying LESS for the old model. They've got to get rid of the T61's somehow...
Besides, they probably don't really have many T500's ready to actually SELL right now, so why not charge the people that absolutely MUST have one a premium, and then when the T61's are running low, start offering slight discounts on the T500's to make them more of a value. -
I'm planning to stick with my T61p for at least 2 more years. Before that I used an A31 (from 2002). There's no compelling reason to upgrade; both have Penryn processors and the graphics on the workstation model are about the same as the Quadro FX 570M.
-
I'm sticking with mine too, cause I just bought an HP
Now seriously, the new series is cool, but you currently have a T60/T61 or R61/R61, it's noth worth upgrading. Your thinkpads are still those of the best laptops out there. -

Once the WiMax chip is included in the T400 in late 2008/early 2009, I will seriously think about upgrading. But, I may wait another year until Nehalem systems are available.
-
I am. It's an unjustified upgrade, but if you're a new buyer, it is certainly worth it for the Centrino 2, DDR3, displayport, and LED tech. I might upgrade if Lenovo decides someday to take the guts of a T series and squeezes them in an X series.
-
I am keeping my 6 month old T61. Works perfectly. I will be ading an SSD to it when Intel comes out with theirs. Dave
-
I am sticking with my T61p, which I got last Sept. The new T and W series have interesting new features, but nothing revolutionary. I am pretty satisfied with what I have so far.
-
I have a t61 on order now, and after seeing the new ones that are going to be like 2-300 more for a similar config, just doesnt seem worth it at all...also newer, means more bugs...its less refined
-
I just bought a x61 and I'm really happy about it. I can't see anything in the x200 that would really make me wanna buy it. and plus, i kinda like the 4:3 aspect, anybody with me on that? lol
-
+1
same thing for me -
-
Well actually, if an X200 tablet comes out, I might pull the trigger.
-
I will stick with mine for at least one more generation

I love my t43 (2.5 years old) dearly. My girl friend has a new NEC laptop and the screen is very clear. But the build is nothing like my t43. When you type quickly the screen wobbles and the keyboard is not in the same universe as the t43.
I have been tempted. I went to have a look at the HP dv4's. Was not impressed. The screen is nice (LED back lighting) however it's too shiny and reflects badly (interestingly my gf's NEC has a reflective screen and it doesn't reflect badly). The dv4 had chintzy silver plastic paint that had started to chip on the display model. There was also significant flex in the body.
My t43 has been so good to me and there really isn't anything wrong with it. It has aged well and looks pretty much new, only some keys have worn slightly. I might be tempted to upgrade to another txxxx in the future, however it would feel like such a waste putting old faithful away. It still runs quietly, smoothly and fast on xp pro. -
I was really surprised about how mobile this baby is, you should get it, your gonna love it -
yea, I don't like the hp's. they're only popular because every bestbuy has them on display.

I want 4:3 so bad, I hate this widescreen crap its so useless....when you look at a webpage it uses like a third of the width of the screen. same with word documents. Other than watching movies and looking at pictures, there is no point to them. I'm stuck with a wide though bc thats the only thing offered anymore -
In a prior position, I used to evaluate and choose desktop hardware for a Fortune 50. I never did see much difference in the hardware itself from one manufacturer's business line to another's. Service and support, on the other hand, varied wildly. Most manufacturers' consumer offerings are... disposables.
My current work machine is an older model HP called the Compaq nc6220 from around 2, maybe 3?, years ago. It's as solidly built as the comparable ThinkPads that were in production at the same time and has served me well. From what I've seen of more current models that some of my co-workers have, that hasn't changed.
My current ThinkPads are in my sig line. -
I have been surviving on my R51 supplied by my college in 2004. It has been great and since they gave me my first laptop in 2002 and it was a ThinkPad, I fell in love with them to the point where I cannot live without the track point. This thing has lasted me through long nights of wow playing at my work study job and in the library when I should have been studying all on a 32mb video card, it will be nice to have a decent graphics card in my laptop for once when my W500 comes in. If other manufacturers offered pointing sticks in some laptops with a decent gaming video card I might have looked elsewhere, but you really can't find a gaming laptop with a high end graphics card.
-
My T60 is 3 years old. If the new T-series won't be available in Asia-Pacific within the month, I'll get a Penryn-powered T61.

why no trackpoints on consumer level laptops?

Sticking with my T61p. It's my first thinkpad and the first laptop that's ever stood up to the use I put it through. Everything on it still works great! I'll definitely buy a new one when it's time. Maybe the next line after what was just released.
-
I'm coming up on two years of faithful service for my R60. Other than dim screen, which isn't really that bad all things considered, I haven't had a single issue with mine. It's got a couple minor marks on the lid, and a bit of shine on the keyboard and touchpad, but looks pretty good otherwise. Though I'm really tempted by the deals they're offering right now on the T61, I'll probably stick with what I got now. If I'm going to have a 14" notebook, I'd prefer SXGA+ to WXGA+ and I don't think the T8100 is much of an upgrade over my current T7400. The T61 with Linux is dirt cheap. You never know.
-
I just bought my T61p in March. The graphics cards is still powerful, even for today's standard, and the CPU is good. So it's a keeper. And I expect my baby to last at least 4 years. If my T42 could last 5 years, 4 is nothing.
-
I've recieved R61 in June and it will be my laptop for the forseeable future (till 2010 perhaps)
-
I have had my T61p for a year and I am loving it. I will definitely keep this laptop for another year or 2. I won't really have any money until after college anyways.

I'm still hanging on to my T41 (2nd IBM Thinkpad) from 2004 but I'm looking for a replacement soon.
Not sure whether I'll go for Lenovo Thinkpads for my next laptop. My source tells me that Lenovo relaxed their specifications of components to make them competitive. -
The Fire Snake Notebook Virtuoso
I am definitely staying with mine. Just bought it recently and it is top of the line and very fast, love it
. I would like it to last like 4 years. The new series doesn't really offer any upgrades that would help me.
With that said I am drooling over the W700.... -
Using a one year old T61 and it's pretty much still in mint condition. This thing will probably last me the rest of my life. lol
-
Does my X31 count? Still fast enough to do college work around campus.
-
Yes it counts. The Pentium M is still a very good CPU.

4:3 ------> Ftw

:::
I have my Z60t PM 1.73GHz. Still Loving it. Fast Enough for
outside use. I like it more than T61. Z60t is Smaller, lighter,
About 4.4lb with DVD Burner Remove & replace by that
plastic Dummy Drive.
Also, Z60t is the First IBM WideScreen Format...!!
Sweet. I will not sell mine even I don't use it later!
::: -
I've had my T61p for about a month and I think it's great
Yeah sure it would be nice to get the newest model, but I don't really need it with what I use it for. I will probably hang on to mine for about 3 years then get a new model.
-
Ill buy a T400 when there on there way out. My T61 is a very stout machine.
Who's still sticking with their current thinkpads?
