This is an old story, happened around a year ago, but I thought I would share it with the boards since this is the first time coming back.

So a while back I consulted these boards regarding a computer to buy. I believe this was 2 or 3 years ago. And I ended up choosing a Thinkpad T61. And so began a love affair with my laptop. After I graduated college I started working in what people have considered one of the most dangerous places in all of New Jersey, USA, providing providing counseling for substance abusers. One day after work, I rushed out of the building and left my laptop in the sleeve on top of my car and started playing basketball on job grounds with my fellow co-workers. After the game I drove off. Completely forgetting my laptop on top of my car. So I am assuming the laptop randomly fell off the car after driving it down the block and turning. After arriving home I searched like mad for my laptop calling my job only to remember for a glimpse that I left it on my car. My heart dropped.

My boss reassured that he was "going to put the word out." (exact thing he said).

By the end of the week my boss called me with a calming voice saying "I got your laptop back, pick it up at my house." It was missing the sleeve, but a quick cosmetic check, the only sign of the fall was a busted micro usb reciever for my mouse and a crack on plastic around the usb port. There was also a yellow sticky note on the keyboard stating "My mother is making me write this note, but I am sorry for taking your laptop, I should have returned it earlier."

I am writing this story and researching on a new thinkpad on the very laptop that fell off the roof of a moving vehicle.

Also, this laptop has survived an angered patient who pushed my laptop off my desk.

Any other laptop survival stories out there?

Nice story, glad to hear your thinkpad is still kicking it after all it's been through, especially impressive for a composite body. I've had my thinkpad41 for several years and it's been through several desktop drops, not to mention in my backpack with books while walking around the city all day, almost everyday for a couple of years(believe it or not this is one of the most strenuous long term stress tests out there IMO).

Now my thinkpad has several cracks on the left palm rest where it's made of plastic, however the rest of the body is fine(I believe the T41 still had titanium in their mag alloy mixture back then, switched to full mag alloy later on). I was actually worried about the new thinkpads switching over to plastic starting with the T61 because all my other laptops that are made of composites usually get fractures or hairline cracks after walking around all day with it in a backup filled with stuff.

I spilled a cup of milk on my Thinkpad. It died, but got resurrected a few days (and an hour of cleaning) later. Sure taught me to never eat/drink around my laptop again...

I just put the drink slightly behind my laptop so if I ever knock it accidentally it doesn't spill on the thinkpad.

the T4x used a magnesium alloy lid, no titanium. Thinkpad had either use a Titanium Composite material or full titanium material as in the case of the lid in some z series. The T4x bottom case use a CFRP material, which is still used in the new thinkpads.

The CFRP resists fracture better than Mg alloy, i have personal experiences at this... because i have damaged x301, t61, x60. Usually, if the CFRP have a crack, it is usually quite stable and won't grow, but this is not the case with magnesium, if you have a crack it would usually propagate through out the case, which usually mean a chunk of the Mg falls off.
